Softcover. Zustand: Fine. Leichte Rillen / Abschurfungen / Risse / Knicke. This collection brings together the best of Northern Irish playwright Stewart Parker's literary prose and journalism. These writings showcase his anticipation and knowledge of the changing cultural conditions of theater life and play-making in the closing decades of the twentieth-century. Alongside this alert cosmopolitan sensibility, Parker's experience of living in and through Belfast's self-inflicted wounding made him keenly aware of what happens when politics fails to deliver a democratic answer to the contradictory beliefs of ordinary citizens. His innate skepticism about politics is etched herein with feisty and unambivalent vigor.

Vintage studio still publicity photograph of actress Constance Talmadge from the 1927 silent film. With a printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso. Talmadge, sister of actresses Norma and Natalie, starred in her first major role in D.W. Griffith's "Intolerance" (1916). Unlike her sisters, Constance preferred to appear in light romantic comedies, such as "A Pair of Silk Stockings" (1918), "Wedding Bells" (1921), and "The Primitive Lover" (1922). Although many of her films are now considered lost, Talmadge is now best remembered for originating the tradition of preserving footprints in concrete outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre after accidentally stepping into wet concrete in front of the theatre in 1927. As with many silent film stars, her career faded with the advent of sound film, and by the 1930s, she and her sisters had retired from the screen. 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Very Good plus, with a small chip to the bottom left corner, lightly and evenly toned overall.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. 8vo. pp 279, [1]. Original publisher's green cloth, lettered gilt on spine and on front cover. With twenty illustrations including frontispiece of Walt Whitman. Signed presentation from J. Johnston to his brother, on the front endpaper, "This volume - 'Visits to Walt Whitman' is one of the 50 copies of the books which were salved from a ship which was torpedoed en route to America during the Great War, 1917. To W. J. Johnston, with affectionate greetings and all good wishes, from his brother, John, Mount Arman, Bispham, Blackpool Nov. 23rd 1919". Germany had 105 submarines ready for action in February 1917 and sank over three million tons of shipping in the six months to follow. In response to the new submarine campaign, President Wilson severed all diplomatic relations with Germany, and the US Congress declared war on 6th April 1917. This book was rescued from a sunken vessel during 1917 and although the boards show water damage the content is surprisingly clean and unmarked. Doctor John Johnston, was a prominent member of the Fellowship. A medical practitioner in Bolton who came originally from Annan in Dumfriesshire. Johnston and Wallace started corresponding with Whitman in 1887. Whitman wrote them more than 120 letters, which are today housed in the Metropolitan Library in Bolton. Somewhat poor copy: covers warped and a little wrinkled due to water damage, split along rear hinge, with frontispiece loose - otherwise sound with complete text.

Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Eleven large publicity photographs of Edna Wallace Hopper (one is a duplicate). Sepia-toned gelatin silver images. Each is approximately 11" x 14". Each is signed by the photographer in the negative (eight by Johnston - including the duplicated image; two by Strano, and one by Strauss Peyton). Most are dated between 1926 and 1927. Each bears Hopper's signature in facsimile in the negative. Small tear in one margin, near fine or better. Edna Wallace Hopper was a fascinating figure; an actress on the stage and in silent films, she married DeWolf Hopper, an actor whose renditions almost single-handedly popularized the baseball poem *Casey at the Bat*. After they divorced, Edna had a facelift, which she allowed to be filmed, and spent the better part of a decade touring with the film, revealing her health and fitness secrets. These photographs, from that period (one with a printed sleeve in the upper left corner promoting her show) reveal the lovely 50-something Hopper in fine form. In a couple of images she appears to be doing exercises. Johnston was known primarily for his portraits of female New York theatrical figures, particularly of the Ziegfeld Follies Girls (and most particularly for his fine artistic nudes). He used a camera that produced an 11" x 14" negative, meaning that he could print large images directly from the negatives with exceedingly fine detail. A nice collection of images of Hopper, a women who was a pioneer in embracing physical fitness and the fine art of aging gracefully.
