In den WarenkorbLater Marbled Hardback. Zustand: Very Good - See Description. New Edition. 1793. New edition. [i], 250pp.; [i], iii, 238pp; [i], iii, 249pp.; [i], iii, 244pp. There is also a frontispiece illustration in volumes I-III but not in volume IV. 'The Adventurer' was an 18th century bi-weekly paper that was published between 1752 and 1754, and contributors included John Hawkesworth, Samuel Johnson and Joseph Warton. John Hawkesworth (c1715-1773) was an English writer and editor. In 1744 he succeeded Samuel Johnson as compiler of the parliamentary debates for the ''Gentleman's Magazine", andf from 1746 to 1749 he contributed poems signed Greville, of H Greville, to that journal. In company with Samule Johnson and others he started the periodocal called 'The Adventurer', which ran to 140 numbers, of which 70 were written by Hawkesowrth himself. The four volumes have been rebacked and recased in later marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on a leather label on the spine. This recasing is probably from the year 2000. The cases of the books are in very good condition. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and stains. The frontispieces and title pages have some foxing and soiling, mostly noticeable in volume 1. A name has been written on the top edge of the title page in all four volumes.…

This edition, usually referred to as "Bagster's edition", is a reprint of John Bell's edition of 1777-92, which was issued in 109 volumes. Includes introductions with critical and biographical notes by Samuel Johnson and others. "Johnson was able to initiate one more literary project, which proved to be the ultimate success in his career. This took the form of a series of prefaces to a new collection of the English poets, best-known today as The Lives of the Poets. In a contract signed on 29 March 1777, Johnson had agreed with a consortium of booksellers to supply 'a concise account' of some fifty poets: he undertook to do the work for 200, and though he eventually received twice this amount it is generally accepted that he could have held out for a much bigger sum. The first instalment came out in March 1779, the second in 1780, and the third in May 1781. Although Johnson's brusque treatment of well-connected nonentities gave rise to some hostile commentary, his major lives were quickly recognised as setting a new standard for English literary biography. In particular, the surveys of Cowley, Milton, Dryden, Swift, and Pope exemplify Johnson's serious concern with the deepest springs of creativity, as well as his ability to explore with considerable insight some individuals whose character and work aroused profound antipathy in him. Even in an age of greater theoretical sophistication, his reading of mainstream poetry from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries remains canonical, by reason of its attention to verbal detail, its decisive judgements, and its robust expression" (ODNB).…
