Reginald Jacques was also conductor of the Oxford Orchestra Society from 1930 to 1936. From 1931 to 1960 he was conductor of The Bach Choir in London. In 1936 he founded his own Jacques Orchestra, which he conducted until 1960. In 1954 he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He died in 1969. John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury & Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, died 2015 ; FINE. Book.

Discoveries, the book''s opening section, examines the western fascination for the materials and technologies of Asia, which existed even before direct contact was established, and charts the route that early Europeans took to the Indies and the new, sophisticated worlds they found there. Bound limited edition set of the portraits + Camel March taken from a proof set from the 1926 Subscribers edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, This is one of just 220 copies, this an unnumbered one, bound by the Fine Bindery and printed by the Burlington Press in 1977. These are superb reproductions of the plates from the '26 SP in full colour. Bound in pale beige paper covered boards with title printed to front and with darker brown cloth spine. T.E. Lawrence commissioned illustrations for Seven Pillars of Wisdom from leading artists of the day. They were reproduced in colour in his lavish 1926 edition of the subscribers' abridgement. The most important of the illustrations were portraits. These showed readers not just faces, but also the exotic clothing worn by the Arab irregulars. The forty-one Seven Pillars Portraits are reproduced here full-page in the original colours, together with William Roberts' remarkable double-page 'Camel March'. Emir Feisal by Augustus John, oils, full colour. These were printed from a set of proof plates put together by the original printer, Whittingham & Griggs.

Octavo, two volumes bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling, scrolling, and central vignette to the front and rear panels, double gilt-ruled inner dentelles, all edges gilt. From the library of John Singer Sargent, signed by him with his ownership name to front free endpaper of Vol. II and with his bookplate to the pastedown of both volumes. Widely regarded as the foremost portraitist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American expatriate painter John Singer Sargent was born in Florence to American parents and spent most of his life in Europe, particularly in Paris and London. Trained at the Ãcole des Beaux-Arts under the influential portraitist Carolus-Duran, Sargent developed a distinctive style characterized by fluid brushwork, luminous handling of light, and a remarkable ability to convey the psychological presence of his sitters. His career achieved international prominence through portraits of aristocratic and cultural elites, including celebrated works such as Madame X (1884) and Lady Agnew of Lochnaw (1892), though he later turned increasingly toward landscape painting, watercolors, and monumental mural projects such as those for the Boston Public Library.
