The ancient Sanskrit epic The Ramayana is no ordinary story-one of the most important literary works of India, it traverses the philosophical and devotional ideas of the ancient Hindu sages and tells the bittersweet allegorical tale of Prince Rama and his bride Sita. Exiled for fourteen years in the company of his brother and his bride, Rama is heartbroken when the demon king Ravana sneaks off with Sita in the dark of night; ultimately gathering an army of monkeys and bears to search for Sita, Rama kills Ravana and witnesses Sita's purification by fire-which proves her chastity and vindication by the gods-and the couple return triumphantly to Ayodhya, beginning the righteous rule of Ram-raj and inaugurating a golden age for mankind. Attributed to the poet Valmiki, the Ramayanahas developed over the years of its oral tradition from its beginnings as the story of Rama, an ideal human being who obeys the dharma, into its present shape as the glorious tale of Rama-a supreme deity, avatar of Vishnu, and glorious ruler. The British Library's edition of The Ramayana features 120 sumptuous images selected from some of the Library's greatest treasures-over 400 paintings from five of the seven volumes of an illustrated manuscript of the Ramayana prepared between 1649 and 1653. One of the greatest works of seventeenth-century Indian art, these seven books were each illustrated on the grandest scale, with paintings occupying the whole page in four different styles of Mewar painting, including two in the style of the studio master Sahib Dib-whose signed work on the sixth book, "The Book of Battles," is without par in classical Indian art. Unlike most large series of Indian paintings, this stunning collection has not been dispersed-and both the huge scale of the project and the telling of its epic story create in this volume a cumulative effect that is overwhelmingly powerful. This lavish full-color edition of The Ramayana-and the major exhibition at the British Library it accompanies is absolutely not to be missed publishing event by anyone interested in the power of the visual image-and the stories that make our cultural heritage what it is today.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Painting in the Kangra Valley is an attempt to survey the painting styles of Guler and Kangra, which flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. The painting activity began with Kashmiri painters, who started receiving royal patronage during the reign of Raja Dalip Singh (1695−1741) of Guler. But it attained culmination during the long reign of Maharaja Sansar Chand (1776−1823) of Kangla. The royal atelier of Kangla produced a large number of paintings covering diverse subjects. The advent of the bhakti movement in North India had a tremendous impact, resulting in a preference for Krishna themes for the artists of Guler and Kangra. The sentiment of love is the main subject of guler-kangra paintings. They illustrate the finest specimens of various kinds of nayika described by the Hindi poets of the Riti genre. The female figures seen in these paintings are depicted as graceful and beautiful idealisations, handled by the painters with utmost delicacy and tenderness. Vijay Sharma s analytical approach, based on facts, gives new insights into the origin and development of the Guler school and the marked influence of later Mughal painting on the styles of Manaku and Nainsukh. Featuring more than 160 images this book is a significant read for researchers as well as connoisseurs.…

Losty explores the well-trod highways and the lesser-known byways of miniature paintings put together by the well-known textile collectors, praful and Shilpa Shah. Starting with a splendid 16th-century painting from the early Rajput Bhagavata Purana, readers will savour the variety of Mughal and other portraits of emperors, princes, courtiers, and of royal elephants and horses. Courtly pictures include several from the Deccan, br>Rajasthan, central India, and the Northern hills. Resplendent ladies in 18th and 19th-century attire adorn the pages, as do paintings acquired for the textiles and costumes they illustrate James, paijamas, angarkhas, turban, odhnis, patkas, canopies, and qanats. Representing the classic texts of Sanskrit and Hindi literature are stunning examples from a half-century ragamala, the Shanghai Ramayana, the Gita Govinda, Harijans, and rasikapriya. Two of the most impressive paintings ever to come out of Nathdwara are featured here, from the hands of Master artists Sukhdev Gaur and ghasiram Sharma.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Defining a distinct style of painting produced in India during the British period and influenced by European artistic norms, this catalogue of Company Paintings in the TAPI (Textiles and Art of the People of India) Collection is a unique illustration of the social milieu prevailing in India in the nineteenth century. Tracing the origins and evolution of this genre of painting, the volume shines a fresh beam on subjects commissioned to be painted by officials of the East India Company, such as occupations, customs, dress, bazaars, festivals and daily life of ordinary people, a world removed from the elite and princely environment that were the chosen subjects of Indian miniature artists. The catalogue of the TAPI Collection of Company Paintings highlights works from the major regions where such paintings were produced Murshidabad, Calcutta, Patna, Lucknow, Delhi, Punjab, Kutch, Tanjore, Trichinopoly, Madras, Kerala and the Andhra Coast. It comprises a rich and accurate record of the diverse modes of dress and manners of the people before the advent of photography. This catalogue documents the first-ever exhibition on the subject to be held in India, being a collaboration between TAPI and CSMVS (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India).
