The Display of Heraldry wurde weitere 7 mal aufgelegt bis 1724. He is, perhaps, best remembered for his monumental work "A Display of Heraldry" which was first published in London in 1610. Born in 1565 (some date 1550) in the county of Herefordshire. This part of England is very close to the border with Wales and Guillim's ancestors were probably of Welsh extraction. He was educated at Brasenose College in Oxford University. In 1575 a John Guillim of Minsterworth married Frances Dennis, and raised a family of one boy, John, and three girls, Margaret, Frances, and Priscilla - unreliable source? The first record of his involvement with heraldry is the Earl Marshal's warrant, dated 23 February 1604, permitting him to bear the tabard of the Portsmouth Pursuivant Extraordinary. From Michaelmas 1613, he was receiving a salary from the College of Arms, though his official appointment as Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary was not made until 1618. The Display of Heraldry was written around 1610 and reprinted as early as 1611. There were seven further editions of the book following Guillim's death, with the last one being printed in 1724. Some historians have suggested that the original author of the Display of Heraldry was a clergyman named John Barkham who was unwilling to have the work published in his own name. Guillim's death is recorded as having occurred on 7 May 1621, probably at Minsterworth, although there is no record of his place of burial. Sir Ilay Campbell of Succoth (1734 - 1823) was a Scottish judge, was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1783 and Lord Advocate in 1784. He became Member of Parliament for Glasgow Burghs in the same year. He was Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General from 1789 to 1808. In 1808, he was created a baronet. He also was Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1799, and died in 1823 aged eighty-nine years. Source: Wikipedia Sprache: Englisch.

"The Fifth Edition, much enlarged with great variety of Bearings. To Which is added a Treatise of Honour, Military and Civil, According to the Laws and Customs of England, collected out of the most Authentick Authors, both Ancient and Modern by Capt. John Logan." A very nice copy - recently bound in quarter calf with burgundy label and marbled boards. Recent end papers. The rest of the book is original and complete. This is an ex library copy, but the stamps are not too disfiguring. A stamp and a couple of location records to the title page. Otherwise some small stamps to the verso of plates. A few of the pages have minor nicking to the edges - but well away from the text. Slight browning to the pages. Overall though, a good clean copy, with nice clear and well pressed engravings in a flawless binding. The first part of the work (Guillim's) contains hundreds of examples of Arms throughout the text. The second part (the Analogia Honorum) contains two engraved dedications, 9 full page portraits and 105 engraved plates containing hundreds of Arms and honours. All uncoloured. [xiv], 1-317, [ix]. [ii], 3-181, [ix]. pp + plates and engraved portraits. 380 x 250mm (15 x 9¾ inches).

In a later (Victorian) half-morocco with marbled paper sidings and end-papers. Ruled in red throughout. With divisional title page for "An exact register of all the Knights of the Garter". Pagination and catchword "Here" on p.432 calls for another leaf before p.435. Signatures however appear continuous and this has been noted in ESTC R236603. This copy has aspects of Wing (CD ROM, 1996), G2219 and G2219a and, despite the erratic pagination, the text runs continuously. Old paper repairs to B1, B4, Gg1 and Gg2 none, save the last, touching text (loss of one word and base of blazon to recto). Many of the blazons with family names added in old manuscript to margins. Text generally very clean, first and last leaves a little age-toned. Original ffep with ownership inscription dated 1789 and a manuscript note dated 1810. Edition : Fourth edition., Recent gilt-lined ½ calf with marble boards, spine in six compartments of raised bands, gilt text on two, four and six, gilt armorial motif on three, edges speckled red, endpapers renewed. , ?This fourth edition is dedicated to the Marquess of Hertford by Richard Blome, whose maternal grandfather, Richard Adams, in his lifetime was in his Lordship?s service. The dedication is follwed by an address ?To none but Gentlemen,? by Francis Nower, who, for the advantage of the printer, was induced to add some hundreds of Coats to the former editions, but confesses there are three families whose Arms are inserted that he could wish omitted. ?The Display? is extended to 444 pages. The ?Register of the Knights of the Garter? is dedicated to the Earl of Northumberland, and the ?Catalogue of Baronets? to Sir Edmond Bacon, by Richard Blome. These lists occupy 36 pages. Of the Baronets, F. Nower observes, there are some Coats he thought better to omit at the latter end, than to have inserted upon uncertain grounds, the printed Catalogue being defective, and the Heralds at Oxford not keeping so punctual an account of them in the hurry of a civil war as formerly.?The utility of this book is much increased, by the addition of an alphabetical Table of Names at the end, which is much wanted in the former.?This edition had scarcely been issued when the Restoration brought Heraldry into more request, and rendered a selection of the examples, upon the rise of a new party, necessary, to obtain a sale.? (BH), Size : Tall 4to., With an intricately engraved title plate, fourteen decorative headpieces and eleven initials. Profusely illustrated with in-text engravings of various coats of arms of seventeenth-century British nobility., References : Bibliotheca Heraldica CXCV, P. (4), engr. title plate, blank, title, blank, dedication (2), ?to none but gentlemen? (2), ?L?envoy to the author? (5), blank, ?to the reader? (2), author?s note, table, 1-402, (4), 403-410, 412-432, 435-444, half-title, 2-36, index (6), (2). Occasional minor tears repaired expertly. Title page laid down on acid-free paper for long-term preservation. Otherwise a very good copy, text and plates are clean and crisp. A number of mispaginations, but the book is complete.

'The Display, which quotes earlier English and continental writers, is divided into six sections of which the first commences with the origins of heraldry, the second contains the basic divisions of the shield, the third and largest describes natural as compared to man-made charges, which are in the fourth section, the fifth has patterned coats without a predominant tincture, and the sixth deals with marshalling of arms. [It] was to remain the standard textbook on English heraldry until the second half of the eighteenth century, and it is still regularly used by working heralds in the twenty-first century' (ODNB). The present copy bears the manuscript additions of at least two attentive readers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The earlier of these owners, writing in a roughly contemporary secretary hand, has annotated virtually every coat of arms (of which there are often three or four to a page) with abbreviated tinctures, e.g. 'az' for azure' and 'g' for 'gules'. This was likely the same assiduous reader who corrected 'Glocester-shire' to Wiltshire on p. 284 and added a rhyming Latin proverb about chance to a section about the canting arms of the Ambesace (i.e. ames-ace) family ('Or, three Dice, Sable, each charged with an Ace, Argent'), in which Guillim also condemns dice-playing as 'a Spurre to wickednesse, and the roadway to desperation'. Our later, eighteenth-century owner has supplemented these by summarising each entry with the blazon and name of the family in question and by adding four comprehensive family indices. Provenance:With the bookplate of Edward Francis Witts (18131886), son of the clergyman and diarist Francis Edward Witts (17831854) and his successor as rector of Upper Slaughter, Gloucestershire.
