Paperback. Zustand: Good. 'When all's said and written, there's nothing better than field mushrooms that you have gathered yourself, on toast, for breakfast.' With more than 250 recipes, Jane Grigson describes the preparation of the best fresh and preserved mushrooms. Besides the traditional use of mushrooms to enhance meat and vegetable dishes, edible fungi are made into pate, powdered, pureed into mushroom ketchup, baked into a flan (an Alice B. Toklas specialty), baked as a cake and used in many other dishes - from the simple to the highly sophisticated - for soups, sauces, stuffings, main courses, too intriguing to resist. Included are helpful tips for selecting and preserving the best edible mushrooms (both wild and cultivated), the folklore behind the recipes, a brief history of mushroom cultivation, guides to distinguish edible from poisonous fungi for those who venture to pick their own, and charming line drawings of the twenty-one most common species. …

Hardback with pictorial cloth designed and lettered by Craxton to front and rear boards. 21 × 14cm, vi + 122pp. Visionary Poems and Passages; or, The Poet's Eye was the second title in the New Excursions into English Poetry series. Grigson assembled a collection of English poetry centred on intense visual observation and visionary experience. The anthology brought together poets ranging from Thomas Traherne, William Blake, and John Clare to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and modern contemporaries. The 22 year old John Craxton was chosen as an emerging figure in the British Neo-Romantic movement to illustrate, and he created sixteen full-page colour lithographs, as well as smaller black and white drawings within the text. All sixteen are present. Condition: This is a good plus copy. There is tanning and foxing to the page's and board's edges but the contents are in very good condition, with just a little marginal tanning. As mentioned, the book has been collated and all plates are present. Neat previous owner's inscription to ffep.…

In den WarenkorbOriginal Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Very good in cream stapled wrappers. Front cover lightly stained at the top. Staples rusty but holding. Covers somewhat discoloured with age and handling. Some light creasing. No tears. Contents very good. 210mm x 155mm. 18 pages. ***The second issue of this literary periodical, published by Geoffrey Grigson at Cambridge University. This issue includes articles and poems by the following writers: George Barker, William Empson, Herbert Read, John Pudney, Louis Macneice, Allen Tate and Geoffrey Grigson. ***A very good copy of this 1930s literary magazine, including the poem "On Hearing a Legend Played on the Viola" by Herbert Read. Also includes the poem "The Meaning of Life" by Allen Tate, who first published his poetry the year before in 1932. ***This important literary magazine helped to establish the reputation of the more favoured poets of the thirties, notably Auden, Spender and Macneice, as well as bringing to the fore many of the then little known or unknown writers. Although mainly a vehicle for English poets and critics, the American Scene was also represented. The magazine eventually ran to 34 numbers in 32 issues, and folded at the outbreak of war in 1939. ***Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

No. 8 - the eighth issue of the original first series of this renowned poetry magazine, edited by Tambimuttu, published during the Second World War. Of interest to collectors of poetry first editions, and the publications of Poetry London. ***The wartime issues of Poetry (London) magazine are now quite scarce, and copies in such nice collectable condition are seldom seen. Issue No. 8 was the second of the series to have a full colour cover, and be expanded from 36 to 64 pages, which was quite a challenge considering it was published under wartime restrictions. A superb example of this magazine. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Henry Moore (Colour cover design) (illustrator).…
