The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; At the crest of the long commerce between China and the West in the mid-to late eighteenth century, Chinese porcelain was eagerly acquired by Western rulers, statesmen, leading families, and others alert for the novel. Its primary appeal was that it could be designed to order, and when it came off the trade ships a season or two later, many of the pieces - sometimes entire dinner sets - were decorated with family armorials, images still topical, or designs more or less freely reproduced from drawings or engravings sent to China the year before. Recent interest in China trade porcelain has brought to light significant new examples of this ware. The present study deals with fifty-two pieces or groups of pieces added since 1955 to the Metropolitan Museum's well-known Helena Woolworth McCann Collection of China Trade Porcelain. Dating from the early sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, these tapersticks, cups, pitchers, plates, dishes, and tureens tell us a good deal about the growth of European interest in the ware, how Western tastes in design changed, how the makers' skills and techniques took them from blue-and-white ware through grisaille and famille rose painting to polychrome plus gilt, and how the shapes of porcelain reflected in some cases the direct influences of European metalwork and glassware. All fifty-two additions to the collection are comprehensively illustrated - nearly a quarter of them are shown in color - and numerous views of comparable pieces in other collections are included, as well as the original pictorial sources for many of the painted decorations.

This book is like an exhibition of the rare and unique piece of snuff bottles. An outstanding selection of more than 250 Chinese snuff bottles will be on view in the galleries of the Walters palazzo-style court. These delicately crafted objects were selected from regional private collections as well as from the museum s holdings. Snuff bottle collectors collect as many books as they do bottles. And it is recognized that the more books, journals and catalogues there are in any field in the arts, the more the objects themselves as perceived as high culture. Books and catalogues serve other functions depending on how a collector uses them. They inspire us to collect at a higher level; they are a method of displaying the collection; they increase the value of our collections; they pander to the ego of the collector and, most importantly, they serve to immortalize a collection. It is essential as snuff bottle collectors that we share knowledge through books and catalogues. This book aims at making it to come true.

The subject of the present letter is, as Marshall's entry in the Oxford DNB explains, her 'translation of a play by the first female dramatist, Hrotsvit. 'Paphnutius' was given a world première by Craig for the Pioneer Players in January 1914.' The recipient, Henry Mackinnon Walbrook (1865-1941), was the drama critic of the Pall Mall Gazette. 2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, on dusty discoloured paper, with slight rust spotting from paperclip. She asks if he 'could spare time' to see her for a few minutes, as she thinks she could give him 'some further information about the enclosed [not present] which would make an interesting article for the P. M. G.' If Walbrook 'cannot be bothered' to write the article she can do so herself, 'but I am anxious not to do this as the translation is my work'. She asks him to 'telephone when I may see you'. As he has been 'so kind in helping me on one or two other occasions', she feels sure he will forgive her for 'asking for your interest in this production, which really is worth [last word underlined] your interest'. Minuted in pencil at head of first page: 'Passed on to F. A. H. Eyles for Interview.'.
