Keats' letters were first partially published in 1878, edited by Harry Buxton Forman (1842-1917). Forman then edited the standard edition of the letters for Keats' centenary in 1895, which was republished in 1901. As described in the preface, this volume (compiled by Buxton Forman's son, Maurice), is largely derived from volumes three and five of that 1901 edition, which contains the bulk of the correspondence to Fanny Brawne (1800-65). This edition published, for the first time, additional correspondence to the poet's brothers, George and Tom, and a previously unseen letter to the wine merchant and coffee-man Richard Woodhouse (1760-1833). …

The present four volumes constitute the complete 1883 publication; Forman subsequently produced a supplementary volume in 1890, this volume is not included in the present set. Illustrated with three plates to vol. I, two to vol. II, three to vol. III, to of which are folding, and two to vol. iv, including a frontispiece to each volume. Collated, complete. Among one of the most ambitious 19th-century attempts to assemble Keats's writings, bringing together the established poetry with correspondence, prose, reviews and previously unpublished material, extensively annotated and supplemented with appendices by Forman. Volumes I and II contain the poetry, including Keats's early verse, Endymion, the great narrative poems and odes, together with contemporary critical material.
