Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. Jesse Burgess Thomas was the first senator from Illinois and it was he who proposed the 'Missouri Compromise ' in 1820. In the application for admission into the Union for Maine and Missouri, Congress was forced to deal directly with slavery, which it had assiduously been trying not to do for a generation. The most obvious piece of the Missouri Compromise was the simultaneous admission of the two new states, one slave-holding and one free, in order to maintain the voting balance in Congress. An amendment to the bill, proposed by Jesse B. Thomas went a step further, prohibiting slavery in any new territory (within the Louisiana Purchase lands) north of the southern border of Missouri. The bill was passed with Thomas's amendment in it. By virtue of the Missouri Compromise, the admission of Arkansas, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin and California into the Union were accomplished without having to open the debate on slavery again. It wasn't until the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 that Congress once again took up the debate, ultimately undermining the Missouri Compromise by allowing the states themselves to decide on the slavery-issue, not the Federal Government. Jesse Thomas, who had been retired since 1829, committed suicide in the spring of 1853, while Congress was debating the opening up of the new western territories to slavery.
