First edition of 'one of the most beautiful books of its era', one of 200 copies in large folio with the captions printed in gold (Fine Bird Books 73). Uncut and wide-margined, with 190 fine colour-printed engraved plates, partly finished by hand and many heightened with gold. Jean-Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) was originally a miniature painter before developing a passion for natural history. His first book, Histoire naturelle des singes, on monkeys, appeared in 1800, and he also contributed to the travel narrative Relation du Voyage à la Recherche de la Pà rouse. The present work was not fully published at his death, and was completed by the ornithologist Louis Pierre Viellot (1748-1830), who worked from Audebert's notes. The colour printing technique used here was developed by Audebert himself. 'The colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best colour prints found in ornithology' (Anker, Bird Books and Bird Art 14). 'Color printing was introduced into ornithological illustration by Jean Baptiste Audebert, who was employed as a draftsman by the wealthy natural history collector Gigot d'Orex. He usually engraved and printed his illustrations himself, so that in this respect they are probably the most perfect. Above all, his 'Oiseaux dorà s' (Golden Birds), the first magnificent depiction of hummingbirds - printed in gouache (actually oil paints) instead of Redoutà 's glazes and with the lavish use of gold - showcased the full range of his skill' (Nissen, p. 47). Bound in contemporary half dark olive morocco over marbled boards, with double gilt fillet borders. On the spine, five raised bands. Title and number gilt to the second panel, authors ("AUDEBERT/ DE/ VIEILLOT") gilt to the third. Marbled end-papers. Top edge of the text-block gilt, the fore and lower edges untrimmed. Spines darkened, with some chipping and cracking. Rubbed, with wear to the extremities, especially to the lower fore-corner of the rear board of vol. II. Lacking pl. 214 in vol. II. Some passages of tanning (and soiling), particularly peripherally, and the odd spot of foxing. Offsetting and pigment-bleed at the plates, with some splitting (and tiny losses to two or three) to the fold (or old folds). Jean-Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) transitioned from working as a miniaturist to illustrating the great natural-history works of the French First Republic, under the patronage of Jean-Baptiste-François Gigot d'Orcy (erroneously called "Gigot-d'Orex" in many sources). Audebert died at 41, leaving the present work -- two volumes on birds with metallic or reflective plumage, in the families Trochilidae (hummingbirds), Galbulidae (jacamars), Promeropidae (sugarbirds), Certhiidae (treecreepers) and Paradisaeidae (birds-of-paradise); ranging from the Americas to Africa to Australia -- unfinished. Louis (Jean) Pierre Vieillot (1748-1830) was a pioneering ornithologist, not least in his study of live rather than stuffed birds; his keen observation of "other" plumage -- i.e., not just those of adult males -- is a corrective to the pre-Linnaean heraldic depiction of birds. He was the ornithological heir to Audebert, and brought the Oiseaux dorés through the press after Audubert's death. The etched and engraved plates were inked with oil colors -- an innovation of Jacques Langlois, who also worked with Redouté -- rather than with (just) black ink, and finished in watercolor by hand (Audebert's own, with help from Louis Bouquet). Without the black underpinnings of traditional intaglio prints, the plates, drawn by Audebert and by "les plus belles peintres de Paris et de Londres," of the Oiseaux dorés are particularly luminous; Anker places them "among the best colour prints found in ornithology." The publication, issued in 32 parts, was limited in circulation to just 313 sets: 100 in quarto and 213 in folio, of which 12 had the text printed in gold, and 1 printed in gold on vellum; this set is at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which claims to have the original paintings bound in. The present monograph, which divided the monkeys into six families, was the more impressive for employing a colour-printing process in which all the colours were printed from one plate and oil paint was substituted for gouache. In developing this new technique, his experience as a distinguished miniature painter was probably important. His interest turned to natural history after a meeting in 1789 with Gigot-d'Orex, a rich amateur collector of specimens. When Audebert died at the young age of 41, his reputation as an artist-naturalist was assured both by the present work and the later Oiseaux dorà s (Paris, 1800-1802). Jean-Claude Bozà rian (17962-1840) along with his younger brother, François, were the leading binders of their age, working for Napoleon during the First Empire. Tragically Audebert died at the young age of 41, and this is the last book he completed before his death. Originally a miniature painter, Audubert became interested in natural history after meeting Gigot-d'Orex in 1789, a wealthy collector of specimens, who employed him to paint some of them. Tragically Audebert died at the young age of 41, having completed only one other book "Oiseaux Dores ou a reflets metalliques". Jean-Baptiste Audebert excelled in the painting of primates and his highly respected 'Histoire Naturelle de Singes et des Makis' [Natural History of Apes and Monkeys] is regarded as one of the pioneering works of the golden age of French natural history publication. Audebert was born at Rochefort and trained as a miniaturist painter. This initial training gave him a tremendous ability to capture detail, an important skill for a scientific illustrator and a talent clearly displayed in these exquisite watercolor studies. His introduction to natural history began with a commission to help in the preparation of plates for Guillaume Antoine Olivier's 'Entomologie' of 1789 to 1808. Audebert was also to work on 'Oiseaux dores ou a reflets metalliques' [Golden birds or of metallic sheen], a work begun in the year of his death, 1800. Audebert's innate skill was to temper the scientific nature of these works with an understanding of the aesthetic appeal of the image. In each he not only captures the monkey's form and anatomy but also its characteristics and mannerisms, thus reflecting many of the evolution theories posited by his contemporary Frenchmen and which lay the foundations to Charles Darwin's great writings. Rebound in calf with contemporary French olive calf covers and spines laid down, the original covers panelled gilt with an acanthus leaf roll tool, smooth spines lettered gilt and decorated with bird tools, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, edges gilt; lower cover of volume II extensively restored, some covers scuffed and scratched. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, ONE OF 200 FOLIO SETS WITH THE PLATE CAPTIONS PRINTED IN GOLD from a total edition of 313 (12 folio sets were printed with the plate captions and the text in gold, and one set printed in gold on vellum). The work was issued in 32 parts over 26 months and is divided into ten sections, illustrating the extraordinary beauty of the most spectacular species of hummingbirds, jacamars and birds of paradise. Anker says of the magnificent plates, which are heightened with gold, that the "colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best colour prints found in ornithology." The plates were etched by Audebert from his own designs and those of "les plus belles peintres de Paris et de Londres." Louis Bouquet assisted with the coloring and Langlois with the printing in oil-colors. The whole process used in the printing of the plates was invented by Audebert. All the colors were printed from a single plate, and oil paint was substituted for the more common gouache. Originally a miniature painter, Audebert became interested in natural history after meeting Gigot-d'Orex in 1789, a wealthy collector of specimens, who employed him to paint some of them. Tragically Audebert died at the young age of 41, and this is the last book he completed before his death. The text is largely by Vieillot who continued the work using Audebert's notes after the latter's death in 1800. FROM THE DISTINGUISHED LIBRARY OF MARIA CRISTINA, QUEEN OF SPAIN as the second wife of King Alfonso XII. Her son, Alfonso XIII was born after his father's death, and so Maria Cristina was regent until he reached his majority in 1902. In den Warenkorb"Le Barbu Oranvert" engraving from Oiseaux dorés ou à reflets métalliques, Part I: Histoire naturelle et générale des colibris, oiseaux-mouches, jacamars et promerops, created by Jean Baptiste Audebert (17591800) and Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot (17481831). Published in Paris by Desray, 18001802. Size (frame): 56 × 44 cm. The Oran…ge-green Barbet displays an exceptionally colourful plumage. Only species with a striking, elegant form and iridescent sheen were included in the work. The engravings were printed using an innovative technique devised by Audebert himself, in which multiple copper plates were required for each image. This allowed the colors to be applied directly during the printing processa rarity around 1800. In his preface, Audebert emphasized that the hues were therefore not subsequently hand-colored. In the production process, Louis Bouquet assisted with the coloring of the plates, while Langlois was responsible for the printing. The project, however, was not entirely completed by Audebert himself: he died in 1800, before the publication was finished. Only the hummingbirds were actually engraved by his own hand; the remaining birds, including this barbet, were engraved by Vieillot based on Audebert's drawings and notes. The monumental folio edition appeared in 32 installments, each offered at 30 francs. The work ranks among the finest and most technically advanced natural history publications of its time, representing a high point in ornithological book illustration in early 19th-century France. Barbets typically inhabit tropical rainforests, forest edges, and wooded landscapes, where they feed on fruits, insects, and occasionally sap or flowers. Price: Euro 685,- (incl. frame).
