First edition of 'one of the most beautiful books of its era', one of 200 copies in large folio with the captions printed in gold (Fine Bird Books 73). Uncut and wide-margined, with 190 fine colour-printed engraved plates, partly finished by hand and many heightened with gold. Jean-Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) was originally a miniature painter before developing a passion for natural history. His first book, Histoire naturelle des singes, on monkeys, appeared in 1800, and he also contributed to the travel narrative Relation du Voyage à la Recherche de la Pà rouse. The present work was not fully published at his death, and was completed by the ornithologist Louis Pierre Viellot (1748-1830), who worked from Audebert's notes. The colour printing technique used here was developed by Audebert himself. 'The colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best colour prints found in ornithology' (Anker, Bird Books and Bird Art 14). 'Color printing was introduced into ornithological illustration by Jean Baptiste Audebert, who was employed as a draftsman by the wealthy natural history collector Gigot d'Orex. He usually engraved and printed his illustrations himself, so that in this respect they are probably the most perfect. Above all, his 'Oiseaux dorà s' (Golden Birds), the first magnificent depiction of hummingbirds - printed in gouache (actually oil paints) instead of Redoutà 's glazes and with the lavish use of gold - showcased the full range of his skill' (Nissen, p. 47). Jean-Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) transitioned from working as a miniaturist to illustrating the great natural-history works of the French First Republic, under the patronage of Jean-Baptiste-François Gigot d'Orcy (erroneously called "Gigot-d'Orex" in many sources). Audebert died at 41, leaving the present work -- two volumes on birds with metallic or reflective plumage, in the families Trochilidae (hummingbirds), Galbulidae (jacamars), Promeropidae (sugarbirds), Certhiidae (treecreepers) and Paradisaeidae (birds-of-paradise); ranging from the Americas to Africa to Australia -- unfinished. Louis (Jean) Pierre Vieillot (1748-1830) was a pioneering ornithologist, not least in his study of live rather than stuffed birds; his keen observation of "other" plumage -- i.e., not just those of adult males -- is a corrective to the pre-Linnaean heraldic depiction of birds. He was the ornithological heir to Audebert, and brought the Oiseaux dorés through the press after Audubert's death. The etched and engraved plates were inked with oil colors -- an innovation of Jacques Langlois, who also worked with Redouté -- rather than with (just) black ink, and finished in watercolor by hand (Audebert's own, with help from Louis Bouquet). Without the black underpinnings of traditional intaglio prints, the plates, drawn by Audebert and by "les plus belles peintres de Paris et de Londres," of the Oiseaux dorés are particularly luminous; Anker places them "among the best colour prints found in ornithology." The publication, issued in 32 parts, was limited in circulation to just 313 sets: 100 in quarto and 213 in folio, of which 12 had the text printed in gold, and 1 printed in gold on vellum; this set is at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which claims to have the original paintings bound in. Published in 10 parts, the first two in February and July 1798, the remainder between January and October 1799. Audebert (1759-1800), was born at Rochefort. He studied painting and drawing at Paris. The present monograph, which divided the monkeys into six families, was the more impressive for employing a colour-printing process in which all the colours were printed from one plate and oil paint was substituted for gouache. In developing this new technique, his experience as a distinguished miniature painter was probably important. His interest turned to natural history after a meeting in 1789 with Gigot-d'Orex, a rich amateur collector of specimens. When Audebert died at the young age of 41, his reputation as an artist-naturalist was assured both by the present work and the later Oiseaux doràs (Paris, 1800-1802). Jean-Claude Bozà rian (17962-1840) along with his younger brother, François, were the leading binders of their age, working for Napoleon during the First Empire. This initial training gave him a tremendous ability to capture detail, an important skill for a scientific illustrator and a talent clearly displayed in these exquisite watercolor studies. Only species with a striking, elegant form and iridescent sheen were included in the work. In the production process, Louis Bouquet assisted with the coloring of the plates, while Langlois was responsible for the printing. The project, however, was not entirely completed by Audebert himself: he died in 1800, before the publication was finished. Only the hummingbirds were actually engraved by his own hand; the remaining birds, including this barbet, were engraved by Vieillot based on Audebert's drawings and notes. The monumental folio edition appeared in 32 installments, each offered at 30 francs. The work ranks among the finest and most technically advanced natural history publications of its time, representing a high point in ornithological book illustration in early 19th-century France.
