In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. First Edition. Boston: James Munroe and Company, 1857. First Edition. 12mo; publisher's dark brown blind-embossed cloth, gilt-lettered spine, pale yellow endpapers; 277,[11]pp.; engraved portrait frontispiece and two leaves of plates (tissue guards), text illus. throughout (collated complete). Cloth a bit worn at spine ends and corners, brief damp spots, tiny hole mid-spine not approaching text, frontispiece tissue guard quite foxed; Very Good and sound overall. Contemporary-ish gift inscription to front free endpaper: "Uncle Henry - To his niece & nephews - Lahania [sic] / 1868." At the time Lahaina had grown into a thriving community of Christian missionaries and whalers. The author James Jackson Jarves (1818-1888), better known today for his second "career" as a collector of Italian primitives, arrived in Hawaii in 1837 "In search of health and recreation" as well as fortune. He wound up staying in Honolulu a little over a decade, serving as the editor of the weekly newspaper The Polynesian. Kiana is part novel, part sociological and anthropological investigation of the indigenous inhabitants and their interactions with the local missionaries. The work is adorned with portrait plates of a Hawaiian chief and young girl as well as woodcut scenes, views, and relics. References: Francis Steegmuller, The Two Lives of James Jackson Jarves.
