Contemporary-ish gift inscription to front free endpaper: "Uncle Henry - To his niece & nephews - Lahania [sic] / 1868." At the time Lahaina had grown into a thriving community of Christian missionaries and whalers. The author James Jackson Jarves (1818-1888), better known today for his second "career" as a collector of Italian primitives, arrived in Hawaii in 1837 "In search of health and recreation" as well as fortune. He wound up staying in Honolulu a little over a decade, serving as the editor of the weekly newspaper The Polynesian. Kiana is part novel, part sociological and anthropological investigation of the indigenous inhabitants and their interactions with the local missionaries.
