See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. On the first leaf of a bifolium, the second leaf being blank, apart from the end of the signature 'Jas Sant', which has extended across from the bottom right corner of the reverse of the first leaf. In good condition, lightly aged, with the reverse of the second leaf laid down on a rectangle of grey paper cut from a leaf of an album. Addressed to 'G. Lance Esqr.' The letter begins: 'My Dear Sir / My best thanks for your note. Depend upon it I will look to myself and in doing so look to yr. criticisms and I hope benefit by them.' He reports that he has been 'going hard at the Portrait to day and it is a difficult thing already. I shall have a difficulty with the dress for her Grace [his patron Frances, Countess Waldegrave?] seems to think with horror of my particular style of costume being introduced, so I am making point lace do wonders. [last two words underlined]'. In conclusion he urges him to 'Come when you can and cut me to ribbons and so oblige / Yours since[re]ly / Jas Sant'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged. Presumably written to the governess of a child he had arranged to paint. Reads: 'Madam | I have Mrs. Horsfall's permission to ask if you could make it convenient that I should see her little daughter tomorrow at ¼ past 2 oC for the purposes of arranging sittings for her portrait.'.

Hard back binding in original dark navy cloth covers, oxidised gilt title lettering to the front cover. Folio 14½'' x 12''. Contains 23 12'' x 10'' corner mounted monochrome illustrations on good quality card stock. Perry Pictures was founded in 1897 and lasted probably to the mid-fifties. It's business was mostly mail order from a catalogue. The Perry Magazine was a marketing and communications vehicle from a company involved in schoolroom decoration and the picture study movement at the end of the nineteenth century. The magazine promoted the use of small, inexpensive, reproductions of fine art and contemporary photographs in lessons. Many of the articles in the Perry Magazine contained lessons about moral and ethical issues as well as art history and art appreciation. The content of the Perry Magazine was determined by the economic, social, and political issues of the day. Eugene and Ella met as school principals in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The story of their marriage and business is one of success as capitalist ventures. Having been teachers they understood what teachers needed. The Perry Magazine had a large influence on the introduction of art appreciation and art reproductions into the public school curriculum. Before the publication of the Perry Magazine only the elite had access to fine art. [Ann Rahoi, Autumn 2002]. Small tears to some of the mounting card corners, the plates are all in Very Good clean condition, the hinges to the book have been repaired. Also contains a beautiful colour 'Certificate of Merit' card printed in Austria [probably by Ernest Nister], dated 1904-1906, with the recipients name 'Harry Blackman' as the receiver of the certificate and with his name inside the book. A few spots & marks. Stabbed as issued; dusted & creased at edges with minor tears. 35pp. Yockney had twice been an unsuccessful candidate for the post. The dispute spawned a sequence of half a dozen pamphlets.
