An interesting letter concerning a song mentioned in Lewis Carroll's 'Through the Looking-Glass'. 6pp., 12mo. On two bifolium letterheads. In fair condition, on aged paper. He begins by statig that he has 'taken much interest in theh discussion in the Athenaeum respecting a song of Moore's "My heart & Lute" and possessing some i…nformation relative to it' is sends it to Friswell. He proceeds to give an account of publication, with references including the music publisher Power, Sir H. R. Bishop, John Kemble, Sherwood & James, 'The London Stage' and 'The National Airs'. He ends by inviting Friswell to make use of the information, and to 'see the libretto & music here', but adds that he does not wish his name 'in any way to appear in the affair'.

Signed in ink "Harry James" on the cover above a vignette of a band and a couple in evening dress dancing. There is a very light crease along the bottom edge of the card. Very… good. Eastwood Gardens was a dance hall in Detroit, Michigan, which closed in 1953. The 1942 date of the signature is presumed because Harry James performed at "Michigan Theater" on August 28, 1942.On the two inner sides of the Eastwood card is a menu of beers, soft drinks, wines and champagne served there with prices. Their special Padre Sec California champagne is pictured on the 4th side with the price of their champagne cocktail.Harry James [1916-1983] was an American musician best known as a trumpet player and band leader who led a big band from 1939 to 1983. He was especially known among musicians for his remarkable technical proficiency and superior tone on the trumpet. He was extremely influential on up-and-coming trumpet players from the late 1930s to the 1940s.

Ephemera. Zustand: Fine. An historical piece of Oil Springs Christmastime memorabilia, signed by H. A. Beaton on the verso of the second card to "Jos. Smith. / Co'p's of / H.A. Beaton" - as leader and manager of the Centenary Methodist Church's Oil Springs Morning Choir. Two embossed cards measuring 5.25 x 3 inches wide, joined…together with a gold tassel, decorated in gilt and lettered in blue with the upper card having a Gem type photo of Hugh A. Beaton, the Morning Choir's manager. Lower card has a touch of oxidation to a few of the gilt leaves only, else very fine with the printers credit printed in blue ink near the top edge "Ohio Ptg. Co. New Phila. O". The photo itself is uncredited, however, between the years 1895-1901, Pesha owned a photo studio located in Oil Springs. An elaborate, and very decorative piece of 19th century self-promotion by the Choir manager Mr. Beaton, with the Rev. Edwin Holmes given credit as their Minister, at the bottom. All participating members, and their parts in the Choir, are given on the second card along with their motto "Duty First."
