Vintage double weight reference photograph from the 1937 film, showing Mireille Balin and Jean Gabin in a flirtatious moment. Based on the 1931 novel by screenwriter Henri La Barthe. A seminal noir antecedent, oddly produced by the French, who would go on to consider the Americans to be the inventors of the style. Remade in 1938 as "Algiers," starring Hedy Lamarr and Charles Boyer, and in 1948 as "Casbah," a film musical starring Tony Martin and Marta Toren. Notorious French criminal Pepe le Moko is safe from the police in the Casbah, but begins to reconsider his future in France after meeting, and falling for, a beautiful Parisian woman. Set and shot on location in Algiers, Algeria. 9.25 x 7 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 172. Grant France.
