La lapa ferruginea (Patella ferruginea) es un molusco gasterópodo marino que vive sobre sustratos rocoso estables del piso mediolitoral o intermareal. Es de extinción, debido principilamente a la recolección por parte del hombre y a la distribución conocida se restringe al mar de Alborán y al Estrecho, con presencia en la mayor parte del litoral mediterráneo andaluz y, sobre todo, en las islas Chafarinas, Melilla, Ceuta y penón de Vélez de la Gomera, aunque también se encuentra en Murcia (isla Hormiga). Patella ferruginea está enstrictamento protegida en diversos convenios internacionales (Berna, Barcelona, Directiva de Hábitats de la CEE) y, desde 1999, está incluida en el Catálogo Espanol de Especies Amenazadas con la máxima categoría de protección ("en peligro de extinción"), la misma que tienen otras especies mucho más conocidas, como el lince ibérico o el águila imperial. Se considera, por ello, una especie emblemática de la conservación de la biodiversidad marina del Mediterráneo. La lapa ferruginea cuenta en Espana con una Estrategia de conservación aprobada en 2008 por el entonces Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, y Medio Rural y Marino. Su conservación, como la de otras especies amenazadas, gira alrededor de dos ejes principales: un conocimiento cientifico suficiente para una gestión adecuada y una conciencia social que impulse las decisiones políticas necesarias para su estudio y conservación. En la presente publicación se recopila y analiza la información cientifica disponsible sobre Patella ferruginea, con el fin de que sirva de base para la necesaria actualización de su Estrategia de conservación y difunda en la sociedad el conocimiento de la especie. Patella ferruginea is a marine gastropod mollusk that lives on stable rocky substrates of intertidal zones. It is almost extinct, due to being collected by man and the known distribution is restricted to the Strait and Sea of Alboran, most of the Andalusian Mediterranean coast. It can be also found along the Mediterranean cost of Morocco on the islands of Chafarinas, Melilla, Ceuta and Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera. It can be also found in Murcia (Hormiga Island). Patella ferruginea is protected by several international conventions (Bern, Barcelona, European Habitats Directive) and, since 1999, it is included in the Spanish Catalog of Endangered Species with the highest category of protection ("endangered"), the same as other much better-known species, such as the Iberian lynx or the imperial eagle. It is considered, therefore, an emblematic species for the conservation of the marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean. There is a conservation strategy for Patella ferruginea in Spain, approved in 2008 by the then Ministry of Environment, and Rural and Marine Affairs. Its conservation, like that of other threatened species, is based on a sufficient scientific knowledge for an adequate management and a social conscience that drives the necessary political decisions for its study and conservation. This publication collects and analyzes the available scientific information on Patella ferruginea, in order to serve as a basis for the necessary update of its conservation strategy and disseminate knowledge of the species in society.
