A well-known nineteenth-century Dutch book about the Garebeg (or Grebeg), a large public Javanese royal ceremony held at the kraton (palace) in Yogyakarta, in which the sultan distributes food mountains (gunungan) of rice and delicacies to the crowd in honor of important Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Mawlid al-Nabi (the Prophet's birthday). The word means "followed by a crowd" and combines ancient Javanese traditions (such as Rajawedha, a ceremony in which the king distributed food for prosperity) with Islamic syiar (proselytism). The photographs were taken by Kassian Cephas (or Kassian Céphas) ??(Jogyakarta, 1845 - Jogyakarta, 1912), with the Sultan s permission. He was a Javanese photographer at the court of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. He was the first Indonesian native to become a professional photographer. He was trained at the request of Sultan Hamengkoeboewono VI (1821-1877, reigned 1855 - 1877).
