Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Approximate title: BY SEA FROM AMSTERDAM TO NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. A GUIDE FOR TRAVELERS WITH THE STEAM TRAVEL COMPANY "THE NETHERLANDS". Oblong 8vo. (19 cm.) 165p. Illustrated throughout with numerous black and white captioned photos. Flexible covers covered in brown and black Batik print with white letters on the front cover. Just touches of wear to extremities, Batik cloth clean and bright, white letters mostly intact, all photos in fine condition, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. The author's first initial looks like a "J" on title page, but all cataloging (including Netherlands National Library) says I. Groneman. Isaac Groneman (1832-1912) was a Dutch physician in the Dutch East Indies and an Indonesian expert. He is known for his many publications on Javanese culture and antiquity. This book appears to be the first edition of a travel book describing the voyage from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies via the Suez Canal, with stops in England, Genoa, Aden, and Colombo (Ceylon; now called Sri Lanka).
