Having spent most of my professional life traveling the world, working on development projects, I guess my interest in travel books is understood. Here's another one, and one that has surprised me in both its scope and presentation. Please find: "The Fire Ox and Other Years" by Suydam Cutting. This is a book about the Author's travels over a decade and a half to some of the more inaccesible places in the world-- Chinese Turkistan, Ethiopia, Chinese Tibet, the Galapagos, the Celebes, Nepal and Upper Burma. And if this book about special travels were not enough, it is inscribed by the Author to a former owner. The book is also very well illustrated with 6 color plates, of which three are maps and two are vividly painted images by Alexandre Iacovleff. In addition, there are over 150 b&w photographs, most of which were taken by the Author. This large hard cover book was published by Charles Scribner's Sons of New York, dated 1940 and bearing the Scribner's "A" on the copyright page signifying that it is the First Printing of the First Edition. Condition: This book is in very good condition, with one exception. The spine was apparently splitting and has been amateurishly repaired with common cellophane tape (a good book restorer could fix this but it would entail removing and remounting the spine strip). The boards are also a bit bumped at the corners and at the spine tips. Inside, the only mark I found is the Author's inscription on the front endpaper; the interior pages and illustrations are clean and bright, without blemish or toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, with some darkening doubtless from the acids of the binding glues, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Inscribed by Author(s).

The article about Central Asia on pp. 1 - 57, 44 illustrations, 26 colourful paintings and drawings by Iacovleff, sketch map, covers a bit dusty, pages slightly wavy, good condition. The author spend time in the Tekes Valley, south of Kuldja near Issik-kul in Sinkiang, near the Russian border. Iacovleff was a Russian artist who traveled extensively in Mongolia, China and Japan (1917-19), and with the Citroen expeditions through the Sahara and Equatorial Africa (1924-25) and Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia and China (1931-32).

In October 1924, a group of French men driving Citroen caterpillar-wheeled cars depart for the first expedition to successfully drive across the entire African continent: "Croisière noire" or the "Black Expedition". The members of the expedition drove across the Sahara dessert, through Niger, Chad and Congo for their final destination: Madagascar The French car manufacturer obviously organized and financed the expedition for the publicity it attracted. The present album was published as a result of this expedition. Iacovleff (1887-1938) was a Russian-French Art Deco artist, who was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Goverment following the success of his African paintings made during this expedition. He was reputed as the artist-traveller, and he was also the first painter to visit Central Africa. The drawings included in this album are, therefore, some of the first Western artistic depictions of the African continent and its people. Upon his return to Paris, Iacovleff brought with him over 400 drawings and painting, comprised in about 15 sketchbooks an unique study of Africa. This copy is one of the 1000 deluxe copies of this album, which includes, apart from the elegantly-bound text-brochure, 50 color prints of Iacovleff's African drawings, the first two unnumbered; the rest of them numbered and titled. Most of these drawings are portraits close-ups of men (often tribe chiefs) and women from various regions along the way, who posed for Iacovleff depictions of various scenes from tribes (a dancing scene, for instance), landscapes, animals belonging to the African fauna. Portraits of African women are an overflowing source of exoticism and particularly interesting, and they depict women almost always naked in the upper part of their body in instances such as mothers, dancers, wives, members of the tribe, etc. This album is not merely an artistic achievement of the expedition. Through its accurate rendering of people's customs, their way of living, their costumes, their appearance, their organizational structure, Iacovleff's collection of African drawings is also an ethnographic documentation of Central Africa in the 1920s, a continent still under European colonial rule. -- Bibliography: CITROEN / CROISIERE NOIRE 1924. & C. A printed box-form thick card portfolio with ribbon ties (external dimensions 392 × 290 mm), containing a thin volume of text ('Croquis de Route et Notes de Voyage', [36] pages in stab-sewn printed wrappers, extensively illustrated) and a suite of 50 loose colour plates, each printed on a numbered and captioned bifolium. Portfolio tanned, bowed and slightly marked, with a short split to the foot of the upper joint; ribbon ties frayed; wrappers of the text volume a little creased; plates are generally a little offset onto the conjugate leaf, and about a quarter of them have a very short split at the foot of the fold; the first plate is discoloured from contact with the binding of the text volume; these are relatively trifling blemishes that do not detract from what essentially an excellent example of a beautiful publication. Number 117 of 500 copies of the trade edition (a further 200 'hors-de-commerce' copies were also printed, as well as a deluxe edition of 20 copies). This suite of plates is the lavish pictorial record by the official artist of the Expedition Citroën Centre-Asie, colloquially known as the Croisière jaune (the Yellow Cruise). Financed by André Citroën, and using all-terrain tracked (caterpillar-tread) vehicles from his factories, this trans-Asian motorised expedition covered vast distances in 1931 and 1932. The plates, from Iacovleff's striking pastels and watercolours, encompass portraits and scenes from Kurdistan to Tonkin, by way of Persia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Mongolia and western China. Provenance: Mary Isobel Barr Smith, with a contemporary gift inscription in ink to her 'from Mary Isobel Legoe, Christmas 1937'. Mary Isobel (Molly) Barr Smith (1863-1941) was the wife of Tom Elder Barr Smith (1863-1941), pastoralist and financier; he was the eldest son of Robert Barr Smith (1824-1915). Both were great philanthropists; the library at the University of Adelaide is named the Barr Smith Library in their honour. Molly Legoe was a grand-daughter of Robert Barr Smith; accordingly, this portfolio was a Christmas present to her aunt.

Elle est illustrée de 6 belles gravures hors-texte et de nombreux dessins dans le texte. René Maran obtint le prix Goncourt en 1921 pour ce roman et il fut le premier homme noir à l'obtenir. Il ne devait même pas présente son roman pour le prix mais son ami, l'écrivain et traducteur Manoel Gahisto - dont nous avons dispersé une partie de la bibliothèque en 2020 -, le poussa à envoyer le manuscrit à Henri de Régnier et amena l'ouvrage à l'Académie Goncourt. L'ouvrage sera d'ailleurs dédié à Gahisto et la préface présente Régnier comme un des tuteurs du livre. Reliure demi-maroquin à bandes brun fondé, dos à nerfs, filets, tête dorée. Petites usures aux coins et à la coiffe supérieure, relié sans les couvertures. Bel illustré.
