Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Alexandre Iacovleff (illustrator). 1st Edition. Having spent most of my professional life traveling the world, working on development projects, I guess my interest in travel books is understood. Here's another one, and one that has surprised me in both its scope and presentation. Please find: "The Fire Ox and Other Years" by Suydam Cutting. This is a book about the Author's travels over a decade and a half to some of the more inaccesible places in the world-- Chinese Turkistan, Ethiopia, Chinese Tibet, the Galapagos, the Celebes, Nepal and Upper Burma. And if this book about special travels were not enough, it is inscribed by the Author to a former owner. The book is also very well illustrated with 6 color plates, of which three are maps and two are vividly painted images by Alexandre Iacovleff. In addition, there are over 150 b&w photographs, most of which were taken by the Author. This large hard cover book was published by Charles Scribner's Sons of New York, dated 1940 and bearing the Scribner's "A" on the copyright page signifying that it is the First Printing of the First Edition. Condition: This book is in very good condition, with one exception. The spine was apparently splitting and has been amateurishly repaired with common cellophane tape (a good book restorer could fix this but it would entail removing and remounting the spine strip). The boards are also a bit bumped at the corners and at the spine tips. Inside, the only mark I found is the Author's inscription on the front endpaper; the interior pages and illustrations are clean and bright, without blemish or toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, with some darkening doubtless from the acids of the binding glues, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Inscribed by Author(s).

Zustand: Sehr gut. Original cloth binding, xviii, 393 pages, 181 b/w illustrations, 3 col. plates, 3 beautiful coloured maps, very good condition. Wonderfully illustrated book on the travels of a rich American, mostly undertaken with his wife and mostly made in Tibet. Cutting was one of the very few Americans with official invitation to visit Lhasa, but also Kathmandu (where he stayed with the ambassador Eric Bailey), at that time perhaps even more difficult. But he even could visit Russian Turkestan, the Nagas in Assam (still difficult today) or the Nakhi in Southeastern Tibet, as well as the Tibetan Kingdom Muli - amazing and a very good read. Heavy book, additional shipping is likely. First British edition. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1300.

Zustand: fair to good. First Edition. First Printing. 25 cm, 393, illus. (some in color), color frontis illus., color maps, index, boards worn, soiled, stained, and corners bumped/worn. Some fraying to spine edges, some discoloration inside hinges, small tears inside rear hinge. Charles Suydam Cutting (1889-1972) was a New York explorer, big-game hunter, and financier; he was the first Westerner to enter the Forbidden City in Lahasa, Tibet. His memoirs cover his travels over a period of 15 years. The first major trip took place in 1925--the expedition with Kermit and Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., to Chinese Turkestan, which he covers in detail. Trips to Ethiopia (1926), Assam (1927), ChineseTibet (1928), the Galapagos (1930), Celebes (1934), Nepal (1937), and UpperBurma (1939) followed. But most important of all were his three trips to Tibet in 1930, 1935, and 1937.
