After expressing a hope that they will be meeting Poole now that they are both on the council of the Royal Historical Society, he explains that he is writing in relation to his redrafting of 'the early part of Per…cy for the Complete Peerage', noting that 'the present draft is certainly alarming'. He is taking it 'down to 1245' and finds it 'full of snags'. He has 'just finished a draft of Jocelin, Agnes de Percy's husband', and L. C. Loyd has pointed him towards Poole's 'paper in the volume of essays presented to your Father', and he asks for 'documentary evidence' regarding Jocelin's paternity: 'I should be very grateful to have the reference which I could incorporate. In one of his charters to Reading Abbey Jocelin mentions his father duke Godfrey & his mother - but unfortunately unnamed.' He ends with a paragraph regarding work on 'a consolidated index of names & places' to the first three volumes of Sir William Farrer's Early Yorkshire Charters. vols. I-III'.

The History of Charles the Twelfth (XII), King of Sweden: The First Three Books with a Double Translation for the Use of Students on the Hamiltonian System [Volume I only]
Voltaire, François (Marie de Arouette de) 1694-1778 [Charles XII, also Carl (Swedish: Karl XII; 17 June 1682 - 30 November 1718 O.S.), Latinized to Carolus Rex, was the King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718. He belonged to the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, a branch line of the House of Wittelsbach. Charles was the only surviving son of Charles XI and Ulrika Eleonora the Elder. He assumed power, after a seven-month caretaker government, at the age of fifteen] James Hamilton (1769-1829) was an English educationalist. He introduced the Hamilton System, a method of teaching languages. The basic principle is that words are learned on a word-for-word translation basis before tackling grammar.

In den WarenkorbJames Samuel Walter de Soysa (b.1880) was one of the children of the vastly wealthy Ceylonese tea planter and philanthropist Charles Henry de Soysa (1836-1890) of Moratuwa and Alfred House, Colombo. An Anglican, he was educated at Cambridge, and was a bencher of the Inner Temple. In 1904 he married Maria Micada Piedra Albo, of a… distinguished Spanish family. They lived in London in Kensington, and in Ceylon, where he had his own plantations. The present documents relate to the couple's separation and divorce proceedings, which were filed in London, which resulted in him keeping the Kensington property and paying his wife and then her sister alimony for life. In 1918 he remarried, and he and his second wife Francis Dora Sirimanna lived at 'Sunnyside' in Moratuwa, and then at properties at Angulana and Gurudeniya. Both items in good condition, lightly aged and worn, each with a few pinholes from previous attachment to one corner of the leaves. ONE: Letter, in English, from J. S. W. de Sousa's wife to 'Mr. Powell'. Either a transcript or the Autograph Original signed 'Maria Albo de Soysa'. Fully filling 8pp, 8vo, with the conclusing written written lengthwise up a margin. On four loose bifoliums, previously pinned together. Headed: 'Address - / c/o Mrs. Gámá / Glencairn / Colpetty. / 23rd Nov: 1911 / Colombo / Ceylon'. At head of first page is a memorandum dated 18 April 1918, setting out the documents involved in the divorce settlement, with the autograph signature: 'Before me / J. W. Lawrence / A Commissioner for Oaths', headed 'W. P. 4 / In the High Court of Justice / Chancery Division / Mr Justice Astbury'. Maria de Soysa's letter begins in histrionic style: 'Dear Mr. Powell / As you are perhaps already aware by this time that Mr. Walter de Soysa after being once more influenced by his own people as soon as he reached Colombo he deserted me & is trying to make the Trust null & void after looking so genuine & in earnest about all what he did of his own wish & will in order to recompense for all the wrongs he has done to me. / Now stranded & deserted as I am in a foreign country away from my home & my own people my only chance of getting any justice in this world lies in trusting you, Mr. Lambert & Dr. Gámá.' After a degree of repetition she explains 'the exact position': 'I am sent out of his house at the most unearthly hour of night bag & baggage & had to shelter with my friends as there was great danger of my being ill treated & even poisoned & murdered by his own people helping'. She explains how she has had recourse to law and 'a separation through the court for this desertion on his part'. She complains that she may 'lose everything after him & all will go either to his people or one of his mistresses which he picks up a new one every day & which habit is sure to go from bad to worse being left to himself'. She repeats her assertion of confidence in the advice she is being given, and states that de Soysa 'has already sent a notice to Dr. Gámá informing him of anulling of the Trust & has made another will & instead of having the deeds registered for the Trust & handed over to Messrs Julius & Creasy has them registered back in his name'. She asks Powell to 'kindly act in this matter as is needful instead of being out done & cheated by him & his fraudulent lawyers'. She spends the second half of the letter attempting to influence him, while stating that 'it is not for a moment when I write to you this that I have any object in influencing you on my behalf'. Implying that de Soysa may contract syphilis, she states that there is something 'wrong in putting the properties in Trust of a man who has every chance of being one of these days totally blind, & get struck with paralysis & squander all his fortune if left to himself in company of bad women & gambling thereby reducing himself to the condition of a beggar & then be a bruden to me in near future when he will be 'shuned' [sic] & out-cast by his own people as soon as he goes.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged laid paper. Bower begins by stating that he is sending 'a Copy of a Letter which I have received from Dr Carm Smyth [James Carmichael Smyth (1742-1821) of the Middlesex Hospital]'. Smyth's son (the future Sir James Carmichael-Smyth) is 'a very fine handsome young man Lieut in the Engineers come o…ut a Passanger [sic] in the same ship with us'. Bower and Smyth 'wisely went into the Boat which was lashed to the Stern Gallery to fish sharks which were following the ship - the Boat suddenly canted round in the slings, upon which poor Smyth went plump into the sea'. Bower 'happened to catch hold of the Boat & by the dictate of instinct & fear together, scrambled up again & got into the Stern Gallery'. The slings being 'foul', an attempt to lower the boat failed, and 'poor Smyth was nearly exhausted when I jumpt from the great Cabin window & kept him up till we were both Pickt up'. Bower continues: 'I will thank you to tell his Dad that I think myself well rewarded for my Ducking by the satisfaction I derive from his Letter'. Dr Smyth has sent Bower 'a very fine field Glass', and Bower asks his father to 'tell Sandy to call on Dr Smyth if he goes to London, he is a man of considerable eminence in his profession'. The doctor has 'exerted himself on my account for my promotion in the Army', and 'if he can serve either Graham or Sandy' Bower will think himself 'Greatly overpaid'. The Gentleman's Magazine of February 1800, pp.181-182, gives an unusually long entry on Captain Bower's death, at 'the isle of Perrim, on the Red Sea', praising his character and accomplishments.

Mémoires de Madame de Rémusat - 1802-1808 - publiés par son petit-fils Paul de Rémusat Troisième Édition [Three Volumes Complete]
De Rémusat, Paul [E. Balfour, Balbirny | Balbirnie House] Claire Élisabeth Jeanne Gravier de Vergennes de Rémusat (5 January 1780 - 16 December 1821) was a French woman of letters. She married at sixteen, and was attached to the Empress Josephine as dame du palais in 1802. It was not until her grandson, Paul de Rémusat, published these Mémoires (3 volumes Paris, 1879-80), which followed by some correspondence with her son (2 volumes 1881), that justice could be done to her literary talent.
