Couverture rigide.

Zustand: Joints skilfully repaired. Folio, with woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and initials, engraved allegorical frontispiece and 68 full-page plates, mostly showing various formations, manoeuvring, and engagements of naval fleets; title-page with oval library stamp of "Søe Officerernes Bibliothek Stempel"; a fine, fresh copy in its original calf binding, decorative gilt borders to sides with the cipher of King Christian VII of Denmark at the centre. A wonderful royal copy of this splendid naval work. This is the first edition of this important Danish work on naval manoeuvres, loosely based on the French classic L'Art des Armées Navales by Père Paul l'Hoste, first published in Lyons in 1697. Instructions are given for the fleet to sail out in an orderly formation, deploy for battle in line or column, retreat, cope with foul weather, and so on. The fine and detailed engravings illustrate how the ships of a fleet should shift from one formation to another. Paul l'Hoste (1652-1700) was a Jesuit who served in the French navy as a chaplain. Despite his higher calling he was a gifted naval strategist who developed a system of tactics based on the single line ahead and the independent action of squadrons, using new ideas such as "doubling" and "breaking the line". His book was "a standard work on naval tactics, which includes valuable accounts (with many engraved illustrations) of the battles of the Second Dutch War?" (National Maritime Museum Library Catalogue). An excellent article on Hoste's book by Hugh Cahill appeared in the King's College London "Book of the Month Archive": "Hoste's book [i.e. the French work] was an immediate success and soon became very well known. It was republished in 1727. Over the course of the eighteenth century several books based on L'Art des Armées Navales were to appear. In 1743 C.F.L. Fontenay, an officer in the Danish Navy, published Søe-Evolutioner eller En Orlogs-Flodes? Although this book relied heavily on L'Art des Armées Navales it is not simply a translation of that work. De Fontenay revised much of the text, omitted many of the mathematical elements of Hoste's original, added much derived from his own experience as a naval officer and had the plates re-engraved?". . Provenance: Originally bound for Christian VII (1749-1808) who ruled as King of Denmark and Norway from 1766.

Zustand: Very Good. Karlskrona, J. Winqwist, (1752). Folio. (6),372,(6) pp. With 115 engraved plates (1 folded) which are included in the pagination. Mid-19th-century half calf, worn. Faintly sprinkled edges. Sparsely gilt spine and sprinkled edges. Nice copy with occasional minor stains. From the library at Biby Manor in Södermanland, Sweden. The French original, "L'art des armées navales ou traité des evolutions navales" was published in 1696 and a second edition was printed in 1727. Translated by Christoffer Falkengréen. The nice plates were engraved by Daniel Petersson Milander, who was employed at the Admirality in Karlskrona. In the foreword, Falkengréen writes that he, together with four other naval officers (one of them was his father, admiral Abraham Falkengréen), has excluded some parts which were more odd than necessary and added a lot more which had been improved upon and invented since the publication of the original edition. Paul Hoste (1642-1700) was professor of mathematics in Toulon. He had spent twelve years at sea in the French navy and his work on naval warfare tactics became standard within the field for the main part of the 18th century. Christoffer Falkengréen (1722-89), who eventually became councillor and vice-admiral, was in French service for a few years, and, among other things, commanded the French frigate "Le Volage".

In den WarenkorbFirst editions, which are "always found together" (Polak), the first with a later title intended to freshen "new old stock". Described by Brian Tunstall as "the first major work on naval tactics" (Tunstall p. 59) L'Art des armées navales remained a "sound text-book" for at least half a century, and exercised a profound influence on the practice of naval warfare for far longer. The second section, on shipbuilding, was somewhat less influential, a "highly scientific work", it attempted to impose rigourous method on a process which at the time was perhaps more an art than an industrial process. A sound and not unattractive volume of Hoste's key contributions to theory of war at sea. Paul Hoste (1652-1700), the "greatest of all the French tactical theorists" was trained by the Jesuits and, like so many others of the order, was one of the leading figures in mathematics and science of his time, eventually becoming professor of mathematics at the Royal Seminary at Toulon. He spent a dozen years at sea with the le comte d'Estrées, général des galères le duc de Vionne et Montmartre, and with le comte deTourville whose aumonier - chaplain - he became, and at whose behest he composed the present work. In his introduction Hoste states that without evolutions fleets were "like barbarians who waged war without knowledge and without order, everything depending on caprice and chance". The evolutions provided a framework to seize the tactical advantage as it emerged, Hoste showed commanders "not only what was necessary but what was possible". His whole system depended on the five "ordres de marches", orders of sailing that provided the method to form the close-hauled line that Hoste deemed essential to success, and which retained their primacy in the French navy throughout the age of sail. Hoste's Enlightened intention had been to "promote the intellectual study of sailing tactics" in which he was successful, but the clarity of his diktats should be regarded with some caution; "The haphazard reality of tactics and practice and the relative variation on ship and fleet capability that characterized actual performance. would have made his theorizing all but impossible. he settled, therefore, on a simple and uncompromising understanding of sailing capability that bore little relation to reality." (Willis p. 5) Among Hoste's more practically lasting innovations was the detailed theoretical exposition of the tactic of breaking the enemy's line, "a manuvre he felt was much used in the Anglo-Dutch War" (Tunstall p. 62), as well as a "simple, clear and extensive" system of signalling "far in advance of the British equivalent. It was a true signalling system, and not merely a signalling projection of series of sailing and fighting instructions" (p.63), which was an unacknowledged influence Howe's innovatory Signal Book of 1782. It has been widely suggested that rigour in training and precision in execution inculcated by Hoste's works meant that it was only when the French Revolution had decimated the French navy's officer class that the British could gain a foothold and eventually surpass the French. Polak 4512; Brian Tunstall, Naval Warfare in the Age of Sail, 1990; Sam Willis, Fighting at Sea in the Eighteenth Century, 2008. Folio (369 x 250 mm). First named with 134 plates, the second with 11 folding plates, engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout. Contemporary streaked calf, red morocco label renewed to style, raised bands, compartments richly gilt around a central floral spray, foliate gilt edge-roll, edges stained red, French curl marbled endpapers. A little rubbed and scuffed, some skilful restoration at the extremities, spine and joints, some variable browning throughout, but overall very good.
