Rare Dutch edition of "Bilder aus dem altjüdischen Leben" (Scenes from Old Jewish Life), first published in Frankfurt in 1882. Delightfully illustrated with twenty full-page b/w photographic, glossy mounted reproductions of paintings by Moritz Oppenheim, depicting tender scenes of everyday Jewish life. Oppenheim is considered to be the first Jewish painter of the modern era and sympathetic to the ideals of the "Science of Judaism (Wissenschaft des Judentums) Movement." Introduction and captions by J. Hoofien. Text in Dutch. Binding with wear, light along edges, with three inch piece missing at tail of spine, cracked from top to middle of back joint and scuffing at front joint. Small dealer sticker of H. Eisendrath, Amsterdam, on inside front cover. Endpapers with very light wear. Half-title with two and a half inch closed tear at bottom edge near gutter. Title page with name of previous owner inked to upper margin near foredge. Some very light foxing in margins of some plates, not affecting photographs. Scarce. Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (1800-1882), was a German-Jewish painter, considered the first of the modern er. This work, also known as "Bilderzyklus" (Der Zyklus), is perhaps the most well-known example of Jewish genre painting. Up until W.W.I it was the highest selling Jewish-German work.
