Very good+.Herbert Percy Horne was an English poet, architect, typographer and designer, art historian and antiquarian. He was not a bookbinder. None of this book is written as a manual, rather the author offers a narrative history.He does mention fore-edge paintings, starting with the PILLONE Library (p. 34), which contained some 170 books of which over 140 "are remarkable for having their edges painted . . . The designs on the fore edges of the books are chiefly composed of single figures, drawn and coloured in a large and decorative manner: thus the figures of Dante, and Galen, appear on several works. Returning to "my subject of painted book-edges: a late, but very remarkable, example of a painted edge may be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum, on a copy of the New Testament, with the Psalms, in Dutch, 1594 . . . is painted with a multitude of figures [unclear what this means â" checking online with the V&A now I cannot find this specimen in their library holdings]. Horne continues: "In England, where the art has not been neglected, Edwards, a binder of Halifax, in the early part of the last century (ca.1800-1820!) gained a certain repute for his book-edges, which he decorated with landscapes possessing much the charm, which the English painters in water-colours, of that time, gave to their work."Horne is basically using 19th century terminology, without saying the term that is popular today, "fore-edge painting". He singles out three specimens, amongst all his examples of early bindings â" and after Edwards he does not offer any further history on this topic. …
