He thanks Gop [Goss?] for the 'letter of great length extended exclamation marks but otherwise agreeable & genial'. Howard 'can understand that vowing to keep silence the next best thing is to write to someone'. Gop's 'instinct is sound': Howard has 'abandoned Presque Isle which is a 12 hrs journey from here'. Gives a date for his return to Manchester. 'This place is really quite charming, though there might be too much society, but the walks & drives are perfect & the colouring like the Bay of Naples'. He quite understands the 'celebrations'. He approves 'the visit of George Junior Rep: & Indian '. 'We can write to Mr. Osborne for you when I return.' Incomplete Letter (4 November 1908): 12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. The first part of a longer letter. 'I am anxiously awaiting the result of the Presidential elections & feel so American that I am compelled to write to someone on the other side.' Asks Gop to collect from 'the in the Chancery in a pigeon-hole worded with my name, a lot of private letters to Harding's & Sir E. Grey etc. which I was unable to get at before leaving Washington'. Asks for them to be 'put into an envelope & sent in the bag to the F.O.' Among other papers to be sent he would like in particular 'my report on agricultural education of which I know there are some in my room'. Complains that since he has gone 'Charlie treats me as if I was dead, & I don't know whether he is sending my cases or not as I asked him to do [.] Charlie promised he would send me a list of them all as numbered, & I should realy like to know what is being [.]'. Ends here. Pixton Park was the seat of Howard's brother-in-law, the fourth Earl of Carnarvon.

The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts (abbreviated as the HMC) was established in 1869 "to make enquiry as to the places where manuscripts and private papers of historical interest were located and to report on their contents". The HMC's offices were located at Quality House, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, close to the old Public Record Office. The general public were able to visit Quality House during regular office hours to use the National Register of Archives, a computer database of archival references drawn from catalogues and published lists of manuscripts, useful for the study of British history, held in private hands and repositories in both the UK and overseas. In April 2003 the Keeper of Public Records became the sole Historical Manuscripts Commissioner. The chief executive of the National Archives is now Keeper of Public Records and Commissioner of Historical Manuscripts.

ONE: Northcote's letter to Barnett. 7pp., 12mo. On two bifoliums, in a close hand. In good condition, in aged envelope, with red wax seal and two postmarks (one of Woodstock), addressed to 'Henry Barnett Esqre | Woodstock | Oxon.' At the time of writing Northcote was Gladstone's personal secretary at the Board of Trade. The letter begins: 'Coleridge has left town for Sessions, and will not I fear return for some time. This will account for your letter of the 1st. remaining so long unanswered. I am sure we are much indebted to you for your suggestions, by which I doubt not we shall profit. At the same time it is not very easy to make any public statement of the nature you indicate, for the University rule against the interference of the candidates with the proceedings of the Election appears to preclude the possibility of addresses from themselves; and addresses or statements by others are less satisfactory.' From his 'own knowledge of Gladstone, which is of some standing', he 'can confidently say that the one object whhich he proposes to himself in political life is theh welfare of the Church, and that his conduct will be governed entirely by considerations of what is really for her advantage'. He proceeds to discuss what he considers to be Gladstone's position on the question at length, pointing out that Barnett's talk of 'maintaining inviolate the integrity of the Church of England' is 'a phrase which different people take in different senses'. This leads to a passage on Church and State, including a reference to the 'question whether the principle of the Regium donum to Socinians should be applied in the shape of a Maynooth grant to the Roman Catholics'. He discusses Gladstone's position on 'the question of paying the priests', and states that he is enclosing 'a copy of a letter which Gladstone has recently written to an interrogator on the subject of the Priest-endowment, which will perhaps explain his views more clearly than I could do, even were I authorised to attempt an explanation which I am not'. A postscript concerns the use which can be made of the letter. TWO: Manuscript copy of letter from Gladstone to Rev. S. Price Davies. 4pp., 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. Referred to at the end of Northcote's letter. THREE: Galley proof of report of a speech by 'MR. BARNETT'. In one column, 46cm long, and paginated 385 at foot. A parliamentary report, regarding a bill brought forward by Stephen Cave, involving the Board of Trade, the Court of Chancery, and the Albert Life Assurance Office. In good condition, lightly aged. Also present is a newspaper cutting, dated in manuscript 7 August 1852, giving the result of the 'Oxford University Election'.

In French written during the last days of his life from the place he died.Under the terms of a treaty with the Netherlands, England was to supply a 6,000-man force to aid the Dutch in war against the Spanish. Southampton, with his son, James, took command of the expeditionary force, but both succumbed to an unspecified illness. Southampton died on 10 November 1624, an undramatic end to a life filled with boisterous adventures in the world of politics, literature, and arms. He fought against the Spanish in the Calais expedition in 1596, and nearly lost his head in the aborted Essex plot of 1600 (into which he recklessly dragged Shakespeare's Globe Company). Most of Shakespeare's sonnets are presumed to have been addressed to Southampton. His letters are rare.

See his entry, and those of Clarendon and Lister, in the Oxford DNB. From the papers of the Earl's sister Lady Theresa Lewis (1803-1865), who was married to Lister. (See their entries in the Oxford DNB.) 1p, 12mo. Cochrane's note is on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium, with the list of books on the recto of the second. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed to 'Rt Hon The Earl of Clarendon'. Adopting a diplomatic approach, Cochrane writes: 'My Lord, / Annexed is a list of the books had from the Library by Mr Lister, which have not been returned. / I have the honor to be, My Lord, / Your Lordship's faithful & obliged Servant / J. G. Cochrane'. Seven books are listed, with formats, two withdrawn on 11 April and five on 11 May. The two from 11 April are scored through in pencil, with the note 'returned by L[ad]y Thomas Lister [i.e. Lady Theresa] some time ago'.
