Vol.I: A-LEO. x+632p.; Vol.II: LIC-Z. v[ii]+655p. 40 black and white plates including frontispieces, with tissue guards. Many other illustrations throughout the text. A few tissue guards are missing. Foxing to most tissue guards, which has in some cases slightly gone through to the plates. Otherwise paper a little toned, but no other foxing. Hinges starting, but firmly bound in publisher's red buckram with gilt decorations and lettering to boards and spines. Boards showing signs of wear, and spines substantially and unevenly faded. A very heavy set (6 kg) which will incur extra postage.

Details of a controversy about (mainly) Wren's City Churches which due to population displacement had very samll congregations and were seen by some as a waste of money. The book reprints argumentative letters mainly from Peek and Trower but also from pseuonymous correspodents Philatethes, Veritas, Zeta etc., and from rectors. Neat inscription on front endpaper 'Thou shalt not remove the ancient landmarks.' Original publisher's textures brown cloth lettered gilt on front cover . Very good indeed.
