In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Hardback, bound in the original burgundy cloth with gilt titling to spine and gilt milestone to upper board. 19.5 × 12.5cm. 310pp. A novel from customs official Henry Atton who rote under the name George Bartram. A contemporary review describes it thus "a breezy picture of English life in the early years of the nineteenth century. The story is full of exciting incidents and stirring adventures, opening with a prize fight between an Englishman and a negro. Many characters typical to the period are introduced to the reader: a couple of country squires and their respective heirs, gamblers, card-sharpers, and other 'Corinthians', a smart Bow Street runner, a yeoman farmer, and a Cheapside shopkeeper. The incidents include a masqued ball at Vauxhall, a night at cards for high stakes, in which a remarkable game of whist is played, and an elopement. Kisses are plentiful, and blows are exchanged. In those days the press gang was a national institution, highwaymen were not extinct, smuggling was carried n all along the coast, and Gretna Green marriages were everyday occurrences." What more would you want. Condition: This copy is in strong readable condition, with a slight lean to the spine and some mottled fading to the boards' edges.

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this exceptionally scarce novel surrounding morality and class division, written by Henry Atton under the pseudonym George Bartram. The first edition. Scarce work. 'The People of Clopton' is a daring tale commenting on the social class system in the late nineteenth century. The author presents issues of morality, telling the story of a young girl who is seduced by a wealthy man. George Orwell refers to this "rather forgotten novel" in is essay 'Charles Dickens'. Orwell highlights that the author's "moral code is quite clearly mixed up with class-hatred". Written by customs official, Henry Atton, who wrote solely under the pseudonym George Bartram. With a prize bookplate from the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon Association, awarding the book to Geo. Wilson, dated Dec 1911. Bound in the publisher's cloth. Externally, very smart, with a little rubbing to the extremities. The odd mark to cloth, with some damp staining to the rear board. Bookplate to the front paste down with offsetting to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Very Good. book.
