A nice work that follows the course of the River Severn from its source, through Wales, Shropshire, Worcestershire, and Gloucestershire, just over 10 inches tall, bound in in the original drab boards , with the original paper spine title labels still present, pages edges untrimmed, complete with all the fifty two plates, though the list calls for one of Llanidloes which was never produced, the covers have some signs of wear and light marks, some vertical splits to the cloth along spine length, though binding still solid, internally foxing and browning to endpapers, a few occasional small marks else contents generally nice and clean. A nice set in its original untouched state.

Fifty-Two Fine Hand-Coloured Lithographed Views of the Severn Two quarto volumes in one, internally, 283*227 mm, frontis, [3], (vi-viii), [2] pl list, [4] index [but numbered 285-288], [1], 2-303, [1]. Half title, frontis, [4], [2] pl list, [1], 2-284 pp + the index from V1, fifty two hand coloured lithographed plates with the whole page outside the picture washed in grey. Plate 28, Village and Mill of Strousbarne, is wrongly captioned - it should read Llandidloes, being the plate referred to on p17 in the list of plates in Volume 1. Early twentieth century vellum over boards with two hand-coloured engravings (from GF Robson's Picturesque View of the English Cities (London: 1828) laid down under varnish on the covers (North West View of the City of Gloucester on the front cover and South View of the City of Worcester on the back) with captions below in gilt. Plate facing p18 in Volume 1 with small printer's crease. Two neatly repaired marginal tears to list of plates in Volume II, just affecting a few letters on verso, red marbled endpapers, small book seller label to fpd, t.e.g. An excellent copy in a very unusual binding. Bound by Leighton Son and Hodge, their binder's ticket to the rear paste down. Contains [viii] 95 printed pages of text with monochrome engravings by William Thomas, Horace Harral, and William Palmer. The Emblematical devices and ornaments were designed by Harry Rogers, and engraved by Edmund Evans. From the private library of Charles Benson (remote family connection to William Gilpin) with his bookplate to the front free end paper. Rubbing across the spine ends and corners, two small repaired tears across the centre of the spine, text block is clean and sound. Member of the P.B.F.A. SHAKESPEARE, William.

The original East Anglian Magazine was a very short-lived publication, only 5 monthly issues were produced - the first four works are bound together here. With the original title pages bound in firsit, but lacking plate and folding plan, sometimes present. The History of Suffolk by Thomas Harral was to be published in parts, but only the first part was ever produced. Certainly uncommon. Binding slightly rubbed and worn. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Annotations in pencil and newspaper clipping pasted to front blank. Some loss to fore margin of page 15, no loss of text. Private ownership. (an44).

Pair of hardbacks in recent matching bindings of dark blue half-leather over grey cloth, gilt titles on red leather spine labels, 5 raised spine bands, marbled endpapers, no inscriptions. viii + 304 and vi + 288 pages respectively, all plates are present in the correct locations, except, as is usual. The one of Llanidloes which is erroneously listed in the contents [28 plates in volume 1; 24 in volume 2] A handsome set.

Collated, bound without one plate, and the map. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Marks to the boards, heavier to the rear. Spine is a little faded. Prior owner's pencil to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spots, mostly to the plates. Very Good. book.

Most tissue guards are present there is some isolated foxing and a few finger marks but a generally neat tight copy. Plates as listed except that Frontispiece of vol.2 is not named but it is listed as "Hall of Mirrors" described at p107. The plates are fine full page engravings and are ex-pagination. 1 volume. Hardcover.

First edition, two volumes bound in one, 4to, (iv), 221, (1), ii, 158 pp. Engraved titles and 67 plates, the frontispiece to the second work bound at the beginning of the first, some occasional foxing, particularly at the beginning and end,small label to paste down. Original gilt decorated red cloth, a.e.g., lower joint with a small tear otherwise very good.
