In den WarenkorbVellum. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Keeley Halswelle (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce and beautifully created historical work on the Normans and their relation to English history. A privately printed work, with illuminated letters, red and black text, in addition to fine illustrations. The first and only edition of this work, which had a small print-run of 100 books. This copy is numbered 94/100 to the limitation page. Bound by Zaehnsdorf in a fine vellum binding. With their binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. From the library of British businessman and once chairman of Cable and Wireless Communications, Sir Edward Wilshaw. With his bookplate to the front pastedown. This copy was presented to Wilshaw by the grandsons of the author, Emma, Lady Pender. They signed this work and presented it to Eward Wilshaw in memory of their own father Sir John Denison Pender. Sir John Denison Pender was the chairman and managing director of Cable and Wireless prior to Sir Edward Wilshaw. The company was founded by Denison Pender's father Sir John Pender, under the name of the Eastern Telegraph Company. Sir John Pender was a pioneer in submarine communications cables. The signatures are therefore of John Cuthbert Denison Pender, 1st Baron Pender and his brother Henry Denison Denison-Pender. John Cuthbert Denison Pender was a British Conservative politician prior to his move to be vice chairman and joint managing director of Cable and Wireless. He was also a director of P & O, Eastman Kodak and British India Steam Navigation Company. Henry Denison Denison-Pender joined the army and fought in the First and Second World Wars. He was awarded an OBE for his service. A beautifully presented historical work. Printed on thick paper, with text in both red and black. To the start of each chapter there is a gilt illuminated letter. With vignettes throughout, and fourteen plates. The illustrations to this work are by Keeley Halswelle. Halswelle was known for his contributions to the Illustrated London News and for his drawings in the 'Illustrated Shakespeare' by Robert Chambers. Collated complete. To this work, Lady Pender provides an historical narrative of the reigns of the Norman Kings. Lady Pender showed great interest in this area of history and dedicated this work to her husband whom was her head cheerleader. Lady Pender passed away before seeing this work published and to the preface it is noted that this work is now 'a memorial of the affection and the sorrow of those who loved her'. A lavishly produced, limited edition, historical work, which demonstrates the high standard of printing at the closing of the nineteenth century and the passion of its authoress. In a full vellum binding. Externally, in a lovely condition with some minor shelfwear and several marks to the boards as is common with vellum. With the bookplate of one Sir Edward Wilshaw to the front pastedown. Presentation inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Spotting to the endpapers and particularly to the plates at page 96 and 134. Otherwise, just the occasional light spots to pages. Very Good Indeed. signed by author. book.
