Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very good copy of an uncommon Victorian study of the origins and development of the Devil figure in mythology, folklore, religion and popular belief. Hall traces the evolution of demonic concepts through ancient civilizations and religious traditions, illustrated throughout with striking plates and vignettes. Condition is Very Good: professionally rebound in black cloth (probably 20th century); clean text block with light foxing to endpapers. Illustrations complete. A handsome and well-preserved copy. Attractive red devil design to the upper board and matching spine lettering may have been lifted from the original covers. The original publisher's binding is no longer present. The binding is firm, square and sound. All illustrations called for appear present, including the frontispiece. The text block is exceptionally well preserved, with clean, bright pages throughout and only light occasional foxing, principally to the endpapers. No inscriptions, bookplates or library markings. End of text correctly concludes on page 256 with index and "The End". A highly presentable copy of this scarce nineteenth-century work on demonology, folklore and comparative religion.
