In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Fine. Undated, but circa 1926. 165 x 134mm (the image 108 x 88mm). The infant Christ, beautifully wrapped and precociously beatific, spreads his tiny arms in blessing. An apparently unrecorded work by Hagreen, not in Wolseley Fine Arts' 1993 exhibition catalogue, nor the 1975 William J. Fletcher monograph Philip Hagreen: the artist and his work; the nearest to this Christ-child are the Christ-in-arms of The Nursing Madonna, 1933 (Fletcher 63) and the Christ-in-cradle of When God Came Down, 1936 (Fletcher 60). Unsigned, as usual. After the artist moved to Ditchling in 1923, "No editions of prints were published and Hagreen ceased to sign his work," recorded Rupert Otten in an introduction to Wolseley's 1993 catalogue. "Only a few prints exist for most of the blocks cut from 1922 onwards and all must be considered rare. No more than 20 or so prints exist from any of these blocks and some are a great deal rarer still." From the collection of Laurence W. Hodson, co-founder of the Essex Press; Hodson gave Hagreen the use of a workshop for the months of August-December 1925.
