Infrequent markings and light spotting throughout (heavier spotting to preliminaries and endpapers), wear to board extremities and joints. Very good. In the preface, Lang reminds the reader that once upon a time 'grown-ups were quite as fond of fairytales as any child' and 'they actually believed in fairies more than some wise and grave little boys and girls do at present.' What follows is a marvellous collection of stories and includes titles such as 'The First of the Hermits', 'St Margaret f Scotland', and 'The Preacher to the Birds'. This copy is in a beautiful prize binding by the Edinburgh Angus Club dated 1913 on the presentation plate.…

Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing. viii, 390, [2], 16 pp with sixteen advertising pages at rear. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with pictorial stamping in gilt, all edges gilt, black coated endpapers. Near Fine with sunning and slight lean to spine, light wear and soiling to cloth. Bookplate and bookseller ticket to front pastedown, penciled inscription to fly-leaf, and 1889 gift inscription to frontispiece. Foxing to prelims and widely scattered throughout text, confined chiefly to margins. The first of the famous fairy tale anthologies translated and edited by the anthropologist Andrew Lang and his wife Leonora. The series began with The Blue Fairy Book in 1889 and ended with The Lilac Fairy Book in 1910, and would eventually overshadow the scholarship and literary criticism for which Lang was more famous during his lifetime. J.R.R. Tolkien adored the books as a child, and wrote about them as an adult in his influential essay "On Fairy-Stories." The number of collections of fairy-stories is now very great. In English none probably rival either the popularity, or the inclusiveness, or the general merits of the twelve books of twelve colors which we owe to Andrew Lang and to his wife. The first of these appeared more than seventy years ago (1889) and is still in print. The Blue Fairy Book is still in print, though it has now been almost 140 years since it was published, but no edition rivals the beauty of the first.…
