About the Book :- The author has drawn inspiration to present this rare and important work from the Karl Marx book of the 'Kings of Ladakh', which has been translated in a masterly manner by him, late Moravian missionary at Leh, we may now venture on a popular history of Western Tibet,… without running the risk of making gross mistakes. Still, there can be no doubt that in another fifty years it will be possible to write a still more reliable book on the same topic. The author particularly is glad that this history gives him an opportunity to place before a larger public the results of Dr Karl Marx's excellent historical studies, and thus to give expression to his gratitude to his beloved teacher. As some knowledge of Buddhism is nowadays considered to form part of one's general education, he has not thought it necessary to explain every one of the many Buddhist mythological names occurring in the book. Only those which are of a purely local interest to Ladakh have been explained. The subject matter of the book is illuminating and delicate. It contains also maps and illustrations. The Tibetan names are spelt in a way to make them pronounceable for English readers. All the vowels should be pronounced as in German or Italian. The book is good for common readers. About the Author :- August Hermann Francke was a German Tibetologist. He worked in Ladakh and Lahul from 1896 to 1908 and published the Ladakh chronicles with an English translation. He served as the first professor of Tibetan at the Berlin University. He served as a Moravian Church missionary in Ladakh, a major region of Jammu and Kashmir Province in the Himalayas, from 1896 until 1909. His return to Europe was occasioned by his wife's illness. He was subsequently appointed professor of Tibetan languages at Berlin University.After Yoseb Gergan produced the first draft of the Tibetan Bible in 1910, Francke corrected it and then sent it to David Macdonald, the British trade agent in Yatung. About the book:- The journey that the author AH Franke, a member of the Moravian Misson, undertook in 1909 was on the beheest of the British Indian Government for carrying out an archaeological survey of the districts that comprised of Indian Tibet (now the regions of Lahul and Spiti i…n state of Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir). These areas had never been explored and Franke was best suited for this purpose, given his knowledge of local history and antiquities and fluency in the Tibetan language. Starting from Shimla on the 14th of June 1909 he traveled upto the Satluj Valley through the hill state of Rampur Bashahr he reached Spiti.Crossing the Parungla pass he continued through Rubshu and the Tso Moriri Lake in South Eastern Ladakh and then to Leh, the capital of Ladakh. After a brief stay at Leh he crossed the Zoji pass to reach Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir. The second volumes give the Tibetan text and English translation of the chronicles of Zangskar, Baltistan, Lahul along with the genealogies of the chiefs of these areas. It contains rare maps of the Lahul, Spiti, Rubshu, Kinnaur areas. About the Author:- Peter Mark Roget LRCP FRS FRCP FGS FRAS (1779 1869) was a British physician, natural heologian, lexicographer and founding secretary of The Portico Library. He is best known for publishing, in 1852, the Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases, a classified collection of related words. He also read a paper to the Royal Society about a peculiar optical illusion in 1824, which is often regarded as the origin of the persistence of vision theory that was later commonly used to explain apparent motion in film and animation. John Lewis Roget was born in Upper Bedford Place, Bloomsbury, London on 28th April 1828 to Peter and Mary Roget. The name Roget is of Swiss origin. John was descended from Genevan Calvinists and Sir Samuel Romilly, the legal reformer, of Huguenot stock. Sir Samuel Romilly (1757 1818), was a British lawyer, politician and legal reformer. From a background in the commercial world, he became well-connected, and rose to public office and a prominent position in Parliament. After an early interest in radical politics, he built a career in chancery cases, and then turned to amelioration of the British criminal law.
