The Western Tibetan sources of information are records on stones and on paper. Records on stones cover the period 200 B.C. to 1900 A.D. Records on paper are the chronicles of the Kings of Leh (or Ladakh). Though these are edited ones, much remains to be done. According to Francke it's not time for the compilation of a "scientific history". That may be written when all the historical records of whose existence we known have been edited. There are historical records, which it is extremely difficult for a European to get hold of, although there can be no doubt about their existence. Among them are the chronicles of several lines of Vassal-Princes. Basing his work on the Book of the "Kings of Ladakh" Masterly translated by Dr. Karl Marx, the author ventures on a popular history of the Western Tibet, without the risk of committing gross mistakes. About the Book :- The author has drawn inspiration to present this rare and important work from the Karl Marx book of the 'Kings of Ladakh', which has been translated in a masterly manner by him, late Moravian missionary at Leh, we may now venture on a popular history of Western Tibet, without running the risk of making gross mistakes. Still, there can be no doubt that in another fifty years it will be possible to write a still more reliable book on the same topic. The author particularly is glad that this history gives him an opportunity to place before a larger public the results of Dr Karl Marx's excellent historical studies, and thus to give expression to his gratitude to his beloved teacher. As some knowledge of Buddhism is nowadays considered to form part of one's general education, he has not thought it necessary to explain every one of the many Buddhist mythological names occurring in the book. Only those which are of a purely local interest to Ladakh have been explained. The subject matter of the book is illuminating and delicate. It contains also maps and illustrations. The Tibetan names are spelt in a way to make them pronounceable for English readers. All the vowels should be pronounced as in German or Italian. The book is good for common readers. About the Author :- August Hermann Francke was a German Tibetologist. He worked in Ladakh and Lahul from 1896 to 1908 and published the Ladakh chronicles with an English translation. He served as the first professor of Tibetan at the Berlin University. He served as a Moravian Church missionary in Ladakh, a major region of Jammu and Kashmir Province in the Himalayas, from 1896 until 1909. His return to Europe was occasioned by his wife's illness. He was subsequently appointed professor of Tibetan languages at Berlin University.After Yoseb Gergan produced the first draft of the Tibetan Bible in 1910, Francke corrected it and then sent it to David Macdonald, the British trade agent in Yatung. As far as we can see at present, the first European, who makes any mention of the existence of the Kesar Saga among Mongolian people, is a German, Peter Simon Pallas, born at Berlin in 1741. He heard of it during his travels in Russian service among the Kalmuks of the Russian Steppes. As long as only the Mongolian version of the Kesar Saga was known, it had to remain undecided whether the saga is of Mongolian or Tibetan origin. Through these publications, the question was now opened-up, how the hitherto unknown literary versions of the Kesar Saga and the recently published popular versions were to be reconciled with each other. The book is the product of extensive study of this topic. About the Author:-August Hermann Francke was a German Lutheran clergyman, theologian, philanthropist, and Biblical scholar. Born in Lübeck, Francke was educated at the Illustrious Gymnasium in Gotha before he studied at the universities of Erfurt and Kiel where he came under the influence of the pietist Christian Kortholt and finally Leipzig. During his student career he made a special study of Hebrew and Greek; and in order to learn Hebrew more thoroughly, he for some time put himself under the instructions of Ezra Edzardi at Hamburg.
