He has a deen interest in diplomats, and has also nicknamed 'the Cunning' and 'the Universal Spider', with his enemies accusing him of spinning plots and conspiracies.Originally written in French by the historian Pierre Matthieu. Matthieu was a part of French court, enjoying special attentions from Henry VI, and accompanying Louis XIII on sieges.Translated into English by Edward Grimeston, a sergeant-at-arms, and one of the most active translators of his day.Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to the front paste down. In a full calf, repaired to head off the spine and tail of the front board. Externally, generally smart. Title page laid down, with significant losses to perimeters, with extensive neat contemporary ink notations to this leaf. Following leaf partially restored. Pages significantly age toned due to paper type, with light tide marks to perimeters of the majority of leaves. The odd marginal ink notation. Small closed tear to tail of leaf 2N6. Le Petit, La grande chronique ancienne et moderne (Dordrecht: 1601), and utilizes the same plates by Christoffel von Sichem for the engraved title border and engraved portraits. Grimeston includes a translation of Le Petit's preface and indicates that most of the continuation is derived from Emanuel van Meteren. This is one of several large and influential European histories which Gimeston translated or derived from foreign sources, the others devoted to France, Spain, and Venice. STC 12374.
