He has a deen interest in diplomats, and has also nicknamed 'the Cunning' and 'the Universal Spider', with his enemies accusing him of spinning plots and conspiracies.Originally written in French by the historian Pierre Matthieu. Matthieu was a part of French court, enjoying special attentions from Henry VI, and accompanying Louis XIII on sieges.Translated into English by Edward Grimeston, a sergeant-at-arms, and one of the most active translators of his day.Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to the front paste down. In a full calf, repaired to head off the spine and tail of the front board. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing and marks to the boards and spine, including a larger patch of rubbing to the front board. Light bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the tail of the spine. Lacking the first and final blank. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional spot and handling mark. Title page is repaired. The very scarce first English language edition of this history of sixteenth century France, translated from the original French by Edward Grimeston. Grimeston supplied a number of additions to the work, mostly from works of Pierre Matthieu. Among Grimeston's notable additions to de Serre's work is also a selection from Champlain titled 'TheNavigationoftheFrench to NewFranceor Canada', describingtheIndians he encountered at Tadoussac in 1603.Illustrated with a number of vignette woodcuts throughout.This work was originally written by historian Jean de Serres when he was serving as an advisor to King Henry IV during the Wars of ReligionESTC Citation No. S117097With the register: [2], A8 [1], B-S6, T4, 2A-5X5. Rebacked, in a full calf binding, with original spine laid down and boards restored. Endpapers renewed. Externally, very smart. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Title page laid down, with significant losses to perimeters, with extensive neat contemporary ink notations to this leaf. Following leaf partially restored. Pages significantly age toned due to paper type, with light tide marks to perimeters of the majority of leaves. The odd marginal ink notation. Small closed tear to tail of leaf 2N6. Marginal tape reinforcements to gutter of leaves A1-B3, index leaves 5X2-4, and a small number of further leaves. Good. book.

Garway (dated 1616), and Powle Garway. First Edition, First Issue. The work is largely a translation from J. F. Le Petit, La grande chronique ancienne et moderne (Dordrecht: 1601), and utilizes the same plates by Christoffel von Sichem for the engraved title border and engraved portraits. Grimeston includes a translation of Le Petit's preface and indicates that most of the continuation is derived from Emanuel van Meteren. This is one of several large and influential European histories which Gimeston translated or derived from foreign sources, the others devoted to France, Spain, and Venice. STC 12374.
