Two half morocco scrapbook volumes filled with newspaper clippings of parodies and humorous poems. In total, there are 269 clippings across these two volumes: 154 to volume I,… and 115 to volume II.The parodies in these volumes date between 1880 and 1884, with a significant number hand dated in ink by a prior owner.Two loosely inserted leaves provide a handwritten index of the subjects of the clippings present in these two volumes. The final leaf of the index is signed 'James Gray', indicating he was responsible for creating this scrapbook.The first collection of parodies in volume I involve retellings of Hamlet's most famous soliloquy. Thirteen clippings present parodies of 'To be or not to be', with contributions from William Garbutt, 'T.C.', John Gilbert, John Rowell Waller, R. Irving, J. S. In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST CATALAN COOKBOOK IN ENGLISH. 101 pp. Irving Davis (1889-1967) was a well-known antiquarian book dealer and a little-known gourmet. At his death he had completed this collection of Catalan recipes, which he called "impossible" because he doubted (in jest) that they could be replicated outside Catalonia.… A friend of Davis, food writer Patience Gray (best known for "Honey from a Weed"), edited the manuscript and added a preface and helpful notes. Nicole Fenosa (an artist, wife of Catalan sculptor Apel les Fenosa) contributed 11 ORIGINAL DRYPOINT ENGRAVINGS, 10 of which are full-page and hors-texte. Lucien Scheler, a very well-known Paris book dealer and also a friend of Davis', published the book. The names of the sixty dishes featured appear in both Catalan and English, the recipes themselves are entirely in English. EDITION LIMITED TO 165 NUMBERED COPIES, ALL PRINTED ON FINE RIVES WOVE PAPER, SIGNED IN PENCIL BY SCHELER AND FENOSA. 4to. Loose as issued in original wraps. UNCUT, FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. In the original cloth chemise and slipcase (lettering on chemise a bit faded). A VERY RARE AND FASCINATING BOOK, one of the few cookbooks ever published in such a lavish edition. Quite an oddity: a French livre d'artiste in English, devoted to Catalan cuisine. Truly a labor of love. Nicole Fenosa (illustrator).

Generically inscribed by the editor on the title page, with his business card laid in: "With sincere regards, Kenneth I. Brown / 16 May 1934."…Ownership names to front pastedown and endpaper, mild softening to spine ends, with spot of board exposure at lower corner of front board; Near Fine, Dustjacket is price-clipped, gently spine-sunned, and dusty overall; Very Good+. Narrative of Harold Studley Gray's career as a C.O. during WWI, told through his letters from prison. Gray worked as a YMCA volunteer in British prison camps at the beginning of the war, then refused to accept conscription upon his return to America in 1919, claiming it would "mar his relation to God." Gray was reputedly one of only two C.O.'s to be threatened with the death sentence for refusal to serve in the Great War, though he eventually was released from service with a dishonorable discharge. Includes much on his incarceration in Leavenworth and Alcatraz. Uncommon in jacket. SUVAK 407. Signed.
