This book analyzes in detail the arguments of those who hold that position and shows that in many cases the critics fail to take into account important, relevant evidence. The principles of an effective critical procedure are set forth, as well as the axioms on which the procedure followed in the book is based, so that the validity of both conclusions and methods can be judged. -- Three themes dominate Aeschylean drama, themes concerned with patriotism, with mans' political and social institutions, and with religious questions. Dr. Golden investigates each theme thoroughly, and shows that the patriotic theme is of much less importance than the other two. Patriotism is discussed as the dominant theme in the Persians, giving the play a rhetorical rather than a poetical character that makes it the least universal in appeal of the extant works. -- The political theme is analyzed as it appears in the Suppliants, the Seven against Thebes, and the Oresteia. A consistent development of Aeschylus political thought is seen in these plays. -- Aeschylus religious thought is examined principally on the basis of evidence from the Suppliants, the Prometheus Bound, and the Agamemnon. Far from being a naive and primitive religious thinker Aeschylus possessed, in reality, a very sophisticated theology. It is shown that his concept of Zeus represents the unknown first principle which is the ultimate cause of all that happens in the universe. There is no justification for attributing to him a belief in an anthropomorphic Zeus. It is further argued that in Aeschylus view it is man who is held ultimately responsible for his own destiny on earth. The vision which dominates Aeschylus most significant work is the vision of an ever continuing progress that is forged by the power of the human intellect.
