Original paperback. Zustand: Sehr gut. 260 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Scuffed and rubbed binding with slightly creased page edges. Ohterwise in good condition. - Content: One of the controlling premises of this anthology is that the truest history of literary theory is a history of major documents. The opening sentence of our general introduction ''Classical criticism was born of classical philosophy'' reflects our belief that the most significant critical works embody sustained analysis and argumentative rigor, and that the methods a critic uses to arrive at his conclusions can be as important as the conclusions themselves. Consequently, we have tried to avoid relying on short or truncated selections. We have focused on influential texts, reprinting whole chapters and even complete works whenever possible. In addition to works which are significant in themselves and seminal in the history of poetics, we have included texts which, though generally neglected, are historically important and are genuine contributions to critical thought. It was our aim to provide accurate and readable translations. For Plato, we have used Jowett's translation, still unsurpassed for its fluid and easy style. On the other hand, Leon Golden's translation of Aristotle's Poetics is a new one, based on a review of all the important Greek texts from Bywater to Kassel. Our major aim has been to provide interpretation in depth. Thus a considerable part of this volume has been given over to general and individual introductions, notes, an annotated bibliography, to a glossary of proper names, and an index. The selection from each critic is prefaced by an introductory essay, prepared by Leon Golden, which places the critic's work in the context of its time, summarizes its substance and method, assesses its influences on later poetics, and points out significant problems. We have also provided a "General Introduction," emphasizing larger historical movements in criticism, and commenting on critics and texts not represented in this collection. The result is, we hope, something substantially more than a conventional anthology. While one of its functions is to make available important texts, another is to provide the framework of an interpretation of the history of classical criticism. We are grateful for advice, concrete suggestions, and criticism received from Professors Gerald F. Else, the late Procope S. Costas, and Roy Arthur Swanson. We also wish to thank Professor Antoinette Ciolli for her contribution, Frances McConney for typing the manuscript, and Calliope Scumas, formerly of Frederick Ungar Publishing Co., for her invaluable assistance. Finally, we would like to acknowledge with appreciation a grant from The City University of New York Faculty Research Award Program, which helped to expedite this work.
