Summary:Chums was established as a boys' weekly paper in 1892 by Cassell & Company, in direct competition with The Boy's Own Paper which had been launched thirteen years earlier. It attracted readers with tales of daring and adventure such as Max Pemberton's 'The Iron Pirate' and Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island'; these stories, interspersed with competitions, editorials and rich illustrations, earned Chums considerable popularity. The publication was also notable for its sponsorship of the National Naval Cadets, for which it served as an enrolment tool from 1909, and of the British Boy Scouts. In 1927 Cassell & Company sold Chums to The Amalgamated Press, already known in the field for their publication of Schoolgirl's Weekly and The Modern Boy. In July 1932 it was reduced to monthly circulation, and two years later reduced again to an annual. Publication finally ceased in September 1941 with the onset of wartime paper shortages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. George Soper (illustrator). Uncertain as to edition and/or printing. The format is approximately 5.5 inches by 8 inches. vii, [1], 295, [1] pages. Fep has been removed. Color frontispiece. Three additional color illustrations (all present). No dust jacket present. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some edge foxing, spotting and soiling. In the following story fact is blended with fiction. The account of the Battle of the North Sea, in which the "Bl?cher" was sunk, is as historically accurate as is possible with the details at present available. On the other hand, it would be well for the reader to know that the description of the pursuit of the "Dresden" in mid-Atlantic is wholly fictitious. The incident is introduced because it is illustrative of the character of the "Sea Affair" in the earlier days of the war.-- CHARLES GILSON. Charles James Louis Gilson, who published as Captain Charles Gilson and Major Charles Gilson and Barbara Gilson (1878?1943), was a British officer and an author of science fiction, adventure stories, and historical fiction books. Some of his stories were illustrated including at least one book, The Refugee by Arthur E. Becher. George Soper and Cyrus Cuneo also illustrated his writing. His fiction included works about the Pygmies of the Upper Congo. He also depicted Boxer Rebellion era adventures. Gilson served in China and featured China in some of his stories. He was praised for his "wide knowledge of the world" in his portrayals. His stories were also published in magazines such as The Captain and St. Nicholas Magazine. Another of his works featured the exploits of Jerry Abershaw. The Spectator reviewed his book The Lost Column in 1908. George Soper RE (1870?1942) was an English illustrator and etcher whose work appears in books, magazines and journals, including Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland, The Water Babies, Lamb?s Tales from Shakespeare, Arabian Nights and Grimm?s Fairy Tales. Soper is best known for his images from the late nineteenth century onwards that depict rural life in Britain. He was selected to exhibit at the Royal Academy when just 19, and continued to exhibit there most years for the rest of his life. Soper developed a reputation as an expert artist and printmaker, and began illustrating for books and magazines. By the 1920s, he had developed a recognizable and varied set of skills covering watercolors, wood cutting, engraving, etching and drypoint and had dedicated his art to capturing the lives of manual workers, including farmers, fisherman and shepherds. He realized that this way of life was slowly disappearing, to be replaced by mechanization and other technology or trades. George Soper was elected to the membership of the Royal Society of Painter-Engravers in 1920.[8] and continued working until his death in August 1942.
