Erstausgabe
Zustand: Near Fine. First edition. 2 pp. on one sheet. 12 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches; 19.5 x 31.5 cm. Posadas, who was the first Supreme Director of the United Provinces of Rio de la Plata, accused Colonel Jose Artigas (1764-1850) of treason for which he was sentenced to death. A reward of 6000 pesos is offered for his capture, dead or alive. Those of his troops and officers who did not surrender were to be declared traitors, judged by a military commission, and shot within 24 hours if found carrying weapons. Artigas was the leader of an independent band of rebels during the conflict with Spain, but his independence caused problems for the United Provinces leading to this call for his capture and execution, neither of which occurred due to his widespread popularity. Later Artigas would lead the war for Uruguayan independence against Argentina and became its first president. Scarce. OCLC locates only two copies: UC Berkeley and JCB. Furlong IV: 3039. Zinny: Bibliografía histórica, No. 3, p.110-12. Fors: Imprenta de los Niños p.51. Registro Argentina, Vol. 1: 642. Not in Palau. A very good copy, minor foxing and soiling, 2 marginal tape repairs not affecting text, in a near fine portfolio. Modern quarter morocco portfolio over marbled boards, gilt title and decoration.
