Cloth is tattered, revealing the boards along the edges and hinges. Cloth is stained and rubbed. Stamping on the spine is tarnished. Deckled page edge. Front gutter is almost cracked through but muslin is intact. Binding is surprisingly tight considering the outer damage. Small white paste down affixed to front attached endpaper that gives brief notes on the book. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece of a figure in a suit titled "William Harrison Ainsworth Esq.". Frontispiece page is foxed but does not mar the illustraiton. Small pencil marking on title page. Title page is dated 1848. Stated third edition on title page. No copyright page. 396 pages. Interiors are clean and unmarked. 20 original graphic etchings and frontispiece portrait by George Cruikshank. Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life and is remembered for his illustrations in Sketches by Boz (1836), The Mudfog Papers (1837 38) and Oliver Twist (1838). Overall, a poor copy with surprisingly tight binding.…

A distinctive, strong signature, reading 'Geo Cruikshank'. No other text. From the distinguished autograph collection of Richard Hunter, son of Ida Macalpine, whose collection of 7000 books relating to psychiatry is in Cambridge University Library. Macalpine and Hunter had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.…
