Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Why are those who consume beef reviled as Untouchables? The trace of this animus lies in the postsixth century CE creation of distinctions between beef-eating Untouchables, meat-eating non-Brahmins and the mostly vegetarian Brahmins. To unearth this lost history, Dr B.R. Ambedkar undertakes a forensic examination of a wide range of Brahmanic literature. He exposes how the cow-loving Brahmin, for whom 'every day was a beef-steak day' in the Vedic period becomes a vegetarian, while the Buddhists who remained beef-eaters become Untouchable and are fenced out of society. At once partisan and dispassionate, militant and meticulous, Ambedkar reveals how some histories are brutalised by time and made to disappear. First published in 1948, The Untouchables: Who Were They and Why They Became Untouchables?, in Ambedkar's words is 'a work of art even more than of history'. This extensively annotated selection, Beef, Brahmins and Broken Men, furthers his sleuthish search. Every source is examined, every thought unpacked, every knot untied. In a bracing introduction, Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd argues how the right to eat beef is the right to equality, it is the right to life.…

Stiff Wraps. 1st Edition. 1st ed., Royal octavo, pp.vi, 273, incl. Index, col title-page, col and b&w plates, original illustrated wraps with French folds and front cover illustration of the HMS Investigator by Geoffrey Ingleton. Near fine condition. Peter Good was one of a remarkable team assembled by Joseph Banks for the voyage of the HMS Investigator, captained by Matthew Flinders, to survey the coast of New Holland in 1801-03. It also included botanist Robert Brown, botanical artist Ferdinand Bauer and Landscape artist William Westall. Good persued his role as seed collector for the Royal Gardens at Kew. He kept a journal that complements those of Brown and Flinders, with lists of the seeds collected at each of the many landings. Good died in Sydney at the end of the circumnavigation, but his collections made it to Kew where they were recorded in the Gardens' Inwards Book. All these are included in the present work, as well as records of the many plants thus introduced successfully into the English horticulture. (A. George).…
