Mérimée, en tant qu'inspecteur des Monuments Historiques, fut un des premiers à oeuvrer à la redécouverte et à la restauration de la peinture murale en France. On doit à Paul Gélis-Didot et à Henri Laffillée, architectes, peintres et restaurateur pour le second, cette première synthèse sur la peinture murale à travers les régions de France.
