Deux volumes in-folio, s.d., (circa 1880), reliure demi-maroquin fauve de l'époque, dos à cinq nerfs, pièces de titre, titre doré, gardes très décoratives, XIII pages d'introduction, 120 chromolithographies montées sur onglet accompagnées de texte en commentaires non paginé et de nombreuses figures. Mérimée, en tant qu'inspecteur des Monuments Historiques, fut un des premiers à oeuvrer à la redécouverte et à la restauration de la peinture murale en France. On doit à Paul Gélis-Didot et à Henri Laffillée, architectes, peintres et restaurateur pour le second, cette première synthèse sur la peinture murale à travers les régions de France.
