Photography. Zustand: Good + overall. A stereoview image of the railroad tunnel just north of Garrison NY with station master (?) in foreground returning from his daily inspection of the tunnel. From the 'Beauties of the Hudson River" series No. 8008-'09 with that and the title printed on the title label laid on the verso of the orange card. Albumen images bordered by the company name and address. Card is a little rubbed at edges but the image is clear.

A stereoview image of the hotel (now the Golden Eagle) on Garrison's Landing with "Washburn and Leroy grocery store" sign protruding from the building, the ferry building beyond and many people on both levels of the porch of the building. Merchandise is on the front porch and the wood pile for the ferry next door. Albumen image, laid on green card with the text "Hudson River, American Scenery" edges. Dusty, corners of card rubbed, one chipped. No text printed on the verso.

A scarce and important early photographer who came to the United States in 1859, "the first American views to be published abroad commercially, using a revolutionary shutter which improved the images depth of focus."* This arched albumen prints show the "Dock house" with ferry and West Point in the distance. The verso with descriptive text and monogram of an eagle over the words United States of America. The text states that this ferry is the link between the Hudson River Railway and West Point. An early Junk bond, with an attractive bank-note engraving of the Hudson Highlands - a fictitious Garrison's Landing looking west across the Hudson towards the plains of West Point; with a train on the verso. Printed in green & black, 9 1/2 x 15", with most of the coupons attached, and an orange Tax stamp in the top right corner. Issued at 4 percent, principal due in 2361. Signed by Chauncey Depew, (1834 - 1928), whose ancestors settled in 1685 at the present location of Peekskill, NY was president of the New York Central Railroad System, and president of the West Shore Railroad Company. This line extended from Weehawken, NJ, north along the west shore of the Hudson River to Albany, NY and then west to Buffalo; it is no longer a passenger line & now serves as CSX Transportation's main freight route from the west to the New York City area. Very good condition with a small closed tear into right margin.

Issued at 4 percent dated 13 Oct. 1892. It is signed by Chauncey Depew (1834 - 1928), whose ancestors settled in 1685 at the present location of Peekskill, NY. Among many other positions, Depew was president of the New York Central Railroad System, and president of the West Shore Railroad Company. This line extended from Weehawken, NJ, north along the west shore of the Hudson River to Albany, NY and then west to Buffalo; it is no longer a passenger line & now serves as CSX Transportation's main freight route from the west to the New York City area. Approx. 13 5/8 x 9 1/4" Very good condition with some cancellation holes.

Ephemera. A collection of correspondence regarding inventions designed by Theodore S. Brooks, a man who ran the West Point ferry & The Highlander ferry for 50 years. His inventions were railroad ties and seats and heating buildings by compressed air, over 1890 to 1893. Brooks (1836-1912) born in Fort Montgomery, NY, and started work on the famly sloop. At age 20, he moved to NYC and became an engineer on steamboats. In 1867, he moved to Garrison NY to run the West Point Ferry, which became "The Highlander" a position he held for 50 years. (American Marine Enginer, Feb.1911, p. 35) "On retirement in 1911, he was presented a pension of $25 per month by a group of ten persons, of whom Mrs. J.P. Morgan is one." A total of 40 pieces with four hand written notes by Brooks, letters from Hamilton Fish & Stuyvesant Fish, and correspondence from various patent agents and steel companies including the American Patent Office, patent agents & lawyers O.J. Bailey Co., F. A. Lehmann, T. A. Snow, George Whittlesey, James Sheehy, White & Kleiner. Troy Steel & Iron Company; Chester Steel & Casting Company; Chester PA; American Railroad Equipment Company. In 1879 Brooks received a patent for an apparatus for heating buildings by compressed air; 1890 railroad chairs & 1891 railroad ties. Overall very good, but some lower & upper margins damaged.
