El término paramétrico proviene de las matemáticas y se refiere al uso de variables que permiten manipular o alterar el resultado final de una ecuación o…sistema. Publisher's full leather binding with centred gilt roundels depicting St…Ildefonsus, Bishop of Toledo, receiving the chasuble from the Virgin Mary, border of a design built up of small tools of stylised leaves and flowers, two raised bands, gilt devices in compartments, striking daubed paste purple, green and yellow endpapers, all edges gilt. Both parts are printed in black and red though part II is also printed double column. There is a superb large vignette arms of Cardinal Francisco Ximinez de Cisneros also by Nava, some musical notations and there are numerous Initial letters and tailpieces. Apart from two small round purple stamps (Colegio de los Escoceses Valladolid) on the title and previous blank leaf and a neat ownership squiggle on the verso of the front free endpaper this is a truly exceptional copy in the original Publisher's binding which was used on other copies of this edition (e.g. Southern Methodist University; Boston Public Library; Universidad Complutense de Madrid). It has sound hinges and rarely have we seen 18th Century paper so bright and clean, in fact there are no real faults. First edition. It has been said that this production is an outstanding example of the art of printing in Mexico. The work was published by the Archbishop of Mexico, Francisco Antonio Lorenzana and printed at the Palafoxiana Seminary Library at Puebla which was the first public library in the Americas. The Colegio de los Escoceses (Scots College) Valladolid was abandoned in January 2013 and became an hotel in 2021.

Naive early drawing to verso of front free endpaper of a knight on horseback with spear, shield, and plumed hat. Pen inscription, 'imperfect', to top corner. Title page printed in red and black, with single ink blot, not affecting text. Woodcut initials and tailpieces; typographic headpieces. Text printed in double columns. Printed in red and black throughout. Lacking first pp. 52-56 (printouts from an online edition have been provided). Small hole / tear (c. 1 cm) to top margin of pp. 129-137, and p. 1 of second set of pagination, not affecting text. Tiny holes to top margin of second pp. 13-20. A couple of early pen emendations to the text. 3 full-page engraved illustrations, as called for, all by significant Puebla engraver Jose de Nava (1735-1817), 'one of the most talented artists and skilled engravers of his time in the old world and the new'; this Missal 'could well be considered the pinnacle of his career' (Mathes & del Llano, pp. 127-28). Two of the illustrations depict legendary trials imposed on the Mozarabic rite by Alfonso VI of Castille, who, influenced by Cluniac reforms, wished to replace it with the Roman rite: in one, the Castilian knight Juan Ruiz de Matanzas is victorious in defence of the Mozarabic rite against Alfonso's champion; in the second, both the Mozarabic and the Roman rite are subjected to trial by fire; the Roman rite is depicted as leaping out of the flames while the Mozarabic rite remains in the flames, both unharmed. The third illustration is Nava's 'magnificent crucifixion'. Musical notation and engraved vignette, the 'extraordinarily beautiful arms of Cardinal Francisco Ximinez de Cisneros' are also the work of Nava (Mathes & del Llano, p. 128). Cardinal Cisneros had been responsible for the revival of the Mozarabic rite and the first publication, in 1500, of the complete version of the missal. It was this groundwork which was built upon by the editors of this current volume, the archbishop of Mexico, Francisco Antonio de Lorenzana (1766-1771), later elected archbishop of Toledo, and bishop Francisco Fabian y Fuero (1719-1801), both of whom championed the Mozarabic rite (although in 1770 it was not yet authorised for use in the Americas). Cisneros' edition of the Mozarabic rite had been reprinted in Rome in 1750, but this Mexican edition, printed at the press of the Palafoxiana Library, the first public library in the Americas, is 'scarce and of considerable interest (.) a fine specimen of printing' (Lyell, p. 58). The binding, with its central vignette of the 7th-century St Ildefonsus, bishop of Toledo, understood as having instituted the Mozarabic rite, was used on other copies of this edition (e.g. Southern Methodist University; Boston Public Library; Universidad Complutense de Madrid), and is likely a publisher's binding. Contiene una colección de reglas y ordenanzas para la conducta…civil y religiosa en Puebla, basadas en el tercer Concilio Mexicano de 1585. Incluye cuestiones relativas a la manera de tratar a los Indios, uso de lenguas indígenas, prohibición del juego, reglas del uso del tabaco, así como otras ordenanzas relativas a las costumbres diarias. A partir de la p. 656 y comenzando nueva numeración, la Colección de Providencias dadas para los cinco conventos de Religiosas Calzadas de la ciudad de Puebla de los Angeles. Se publicó una segunda edición en Valencia, por Benito Monfort, en 1792. Francisco Fabián y Fuero (1719-1801) se trasladó a las Indias cuando Carlos III lo designó Obispo de Puebla de los Angeles en 1765. Hombre de sólida formación, decidió impulsar un plan intelectual, administrativo y eclesiástico que mejorase a la sociedad poblana para lo que contó con el apoyo del Arzobispo Lorenzana. Se implicó en el debate de los jesuitas en América pidiendo la disolución de la Compañía durante la celebración del IV Concilio Provincial Mexicano; fue promotor de la Academia de Bellas Artes y de la Biblioteca Palafoxiana. En 1773 es nombrado Arzobispo de Valencia y regresa a España. Ligero óxido marginal, pp. 441-486 con pequeña picadura marginal sin afectar, por lo demás buen ejemplar. First edition.
