In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Fair. Cassell's Magazine, Illustrated: June to November, 1902, Clifford Ashdown (R. Austin Freeman & John James Pitcairn), et al. â" First Appearance Publication: London, Cassell and Company, Limited, 1902 Formatting: Large 8vo, pp. iv, 668. Condition Report Fair. The volume's most prominent defect is a vintage repair to the spine, which has been entirely rebacked and overlaid with a red cloth tape that overlaps slightly onto the boards. The original red publisherâs boards exhibit moderate rubbing and shelf-wear, with some bumping to the corners and slight darkening to the extremities. Internally, the text block remains remarkably sound and tight. The pages are generally clean, displaying only age-appropriate edge-tanning and occasional minor handling marks. Despite the external repair, the structural integrity of the binding holds firmly, safely preserving the scarce and highly desirable contents within. Catalogue Note This bound periodical volume is of exceptional significance to collectors of early detective and crime fiction, as it contains the true first appearance of The Adventures of Romney Pringle. Co-authored by R. Austin Freeman and John James Pitcairn under the joint pseudonym Clifford Ashdown, these six stories were serialised here between June and November 1902, complete with the original and striking illustrations by Fred Pegram. The subsequent standalone book edition, published later in 1902 by Ward, Lock & Co., is legendary within the genre and is widely regarded by bibliographers and authorities as one of the rarest volumes in the entire canon of detective fiction. Consequently, this original serialised state represents a scarce, viable alternative for completists, capturing Freemanâs debut in published fiction and his pioneering foray into the inverted rogue narrative. Notably, the volume also contains a series of non-fiction essays by Freeman regarding British lighthouses. Predating R. Austin Freeman's legendary scientific detective Dr. John Thorndyke, The Adventures of Romney Pringle inverts the traditional Edwardian crime narrative by placing the reader alongside a charming, amoral rogue. Romney Pringle is a suave gentleman swindler who operates under the guise of a legitimate literary agent, employing brilliant disguises, elaborate confidence tricks, and a strict non-violent code to relieve other, often far worse, criminals of their ill-gotten gains. A masterful blend of ingenious scheming and sharp social observation, these early stories present a captivating anti-hero whose exploits continue to fascinate enthusiasts of golden-age mystery and classic rogue literature. Fred Pegram, et al. (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Book. Rare complete run of Living Arts Magazine (3 issues published 1963-4),edited by Theo Crosby and John Bodley. Black & white printed in glossy wraps. Crosby associated himself with ICA in the early 60s and in 1963, under Croby's lead, the ICA exhibited Living Cities, to foreground the urban theories of the young Archigram group. The magazine therefore becomes an intrinsic part of the new international vision set out by Crosby and others, overlapping with other landmark publications of the era/movewment such as This Is Tomorrow, and Archigram. Autumn '60 for Ochestra by Cornelius Cardew, Photographs by Robert Freeman and Letter from the Airport by Carl Nesjar feature in Volume 1. Volume 2 includes : Sculptures and Statement by Peter Startup, Urbane Image by Richard Hamilton and Living City by Peter Cook, Dennis Compton et al. Volume 3 includes THe Allegorical Situation by Bernard Cohen, David Sylvester interviewing David Smith, Communication and Symbolic Value by Gillo Dorfles, THe Atavism of the Short-Distance Minicyclist by Reyner Banham and review of Living City by Robert Maxwell. The 50 page Living City section of Volume 2 includes THE EXHIBITION - EXPERIENCE 19 JUNE - 2 AUGUST 1963 described and expanded by it's designers, with Manifesto, Introduction & ket to the numerous pages of illustrations, design and texts. Amongst the many contributions are THE KEY TO THE VITALITY OF THE CITY by Peter Cook, CITY SYNTHESIS by Dennis Crompton, Total Exhibition Structure, MOVEMENT GLOOP, and FINAL NOTES ON THE LIVING CITY. Condition - the plastic cover tends to bubble. A fault uniform in all copies (& apparent in all 9 copies of issue 2 exhibited in Tate Modern Hamilton retrospective, 2014). These copies have some of that bubble effect but are the best I have seen with only a little near spine. Each rubber stamped neatly on colophon page "Michael Farr (Design Integration) 97 Jerymn Street London " (a prestigious London design company). Slight wear to issue 1 cover. General minor handling. Copies are prone to curling of covers due to plastic overlay, but being housed in a homemade cardboard slipcase these copies are better than usual. Minor rubbing to colophon pages (from inside flap printed image). Very difficult to find a set in this kind of condition. VG++/ near fine.…
