Peter Charles Archibald Ewart Jennings CM (July 29, 1938 - August 7, 2005) was a Canadian-American journalist who served as the sole anchor of ABC World News Tonight from 1983 until his death from lung cancer in 2005. Jennings began his professional career with CJOH-TV in Ottawa, anchoring the local newscasts. In 1965, ABC News tapped him to anchor its flagship evening news program. Critics and others in the television news business attacked his inexperience. He became a foreign correspondent in 1968, reporting from the Middle East. Jennings returned as one of World News Tonight's three anchormen in 1978, and he was promoted to sole anchorman in 1983. He was also known for his marathon coverage of breaking news stories, staying on the air for 15 hours or more to anchor the live broadcast of events such as the Gulf War in 1991, the millennium celebrations in 1999-2000, and the September 11 attacks in 2001. In addition to anchoring, he was the host of many ABC News special reports and moderated several American presidential debates. Based on interviews, this oral history gathers the voices of more than 60 colleagues, friends, family members and others who fondly recall the handsome and charming Jennings (1938-2005). Garland (September 30, 1922 - August 30, 2011) was an American historian and journalist who wrote extensively about the city of Gloucester, Massachusetts and its fishing industry. Garland was born in Massachusetts in 1922 to a prominent Boston area family. Garland's degree at Harvard University was interrupted by service in the United States Army in 1943. Following the war, he worked as a reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune, Providence Journal, and Boston Herald, before settling on Eastern Point, in Gloucester, Massachusetts in the home of his great grandfather Joseph Garland (mayor). While living in Gloucester Garland was an involved community member, notably acting as the first president of the restoration project of the Adventure (1926 schooner). Mr. Garland wrote more than a dozen books about Gloucester and Cape Ann, beginning with the 1963 adventure classic ?Lone Voyager,?? a biography of Howard Blackburn, known as the ?Fingerless Navigator.?? With his wife Helen?s encouragement, Mr. Garland completed his most expansive book, ?Unknown Soldiers,?? in 2008. The book, decades in the making, originated with Mr. Garland?s own war diary, recovered by a fellow soldier after the future author was wounded in battle. In the early 1970s, Mr. Garland set out across the country to track down his old Army buddies, equipped with a tape recorder and a bottle of bourbon. But when he sat down to write the book, Mr. Garland found himself stricken with a colossal case of writer?s block. It would be decades before Helen, a wartime pen pal with whom he later reconnected, realized that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
